The first full-length trailer has arrived for Overcompensating, starring Benito Skinner as a closeted jock navigating university life.

Also created and written by the former GAY TIMES cover star, the upcoming Prime Video series chronicles the “wild, chaotic journey of Benny,” a former football player and homecoming king coming to terms with his sexuality.

He becomes “fast friends” with Carmen (Wallay Barram), a “high school outsider on a mission to fit in at all costs”.

The official synopsis continues: “With guidance from Benny’s older sister (Mary Beth Barone) and her campus-legend boyfriend (Adam DiMarco), Benny and Carmen juggle horrible hookups, flavoured vodka, and fake IDs.

“Deeply funny and personal, the show explores the lengths to which we all overcompensate while on the path to finding out who we really are.”

The trailer builds on the teaser, showing Benny as he attempts to have sex with Carmen, fantasises about fellow student Miles (Rish Shah), and hooks up with a character played by The White Lotus star Lukas Gage.

It also reveals additional guest stars including Megan Fox (Jennifer’s Body), Matt Rogers (No Good Deed), Bowen Yang (The Wedding Banquet), James Van Der Beek (Don’t Trust the B—- in Apartment 23), Didi Conn (Shelter), Rachel Matthews (Upgraded), Danielle Perez (The Night Agent), and TikTok stars Boman Martinez-Reid and Yasmine Sahid.

Also joining the cast are Holmes, Corteon Moore, Owen Thiele, Nell Verlaque, Tomaso Sanelli, Andrea Martin, Connie Britton, Kyle MacLachlan, Kaia Gerber, Julia Shiplett, Tommy Do, Alexandra Beaton, Claire Qute, Elias Azimi, Maddie Phillips and Charli XCX.

The brat singer also serves as an executive producer and executive music producer.

Produced by A24, Strong Baby, and Amazon MGM Studios, Overcompensating premieres all eight episodes on 15 May on Prime Video.

The first teaser trailer for Benito Skinner’s upcoming LGBTQIA+ comedy Overcompensating is here.

Created, written, and executive produced by the beloved social media personality, the upcoming series follows Benny (Skinner), a closeted college freshman, and his hilarious and heartwarming journey to self-acceptance.

The official synopsis reads: “Overcompensating is a college-set ensemble comedy about the wild, chaotic journey of Benny (Skinner), a closeted former football player and homecoming king, as he becomes fast friends with Carmen (Wally Baram), a high school outsider on a mission to fit in at all costs.

“With guidance from Benny’s older sister Grace (Mary Beth Barone) and her campus-legend boyfriend Peter (Adam DiMarco), Benny and Carmen juggle horrible hookups, flavoured vodka, and fake IDs. Deeply funny and personal, the show explores the lengths to which we all overcompensate while on the path to finding out who we really are.”

The cast also includes Connie Britton as Benny’s mother Kathryn, Kyle MacLachlan as Benny’s father John, Rish Shah as Miles, Nell Verlaque as Emily, Corteon Moore as Gabe, Holmes as Hailee, Owen Thiele as George, Austin Lindsay as Trey, Tommy Do as Kevin, Kaia Gerber as Esther, and Julia Shiplett as Mimi, Cooper Levy as Mitch and Chiara Diberto as Zoey.

At the start of the short teaser, Benny (Skinner) is fantasising about a shirtless Miles in a dorm room bathroom stall. After achieving peak arousal, Benny rushes to his room to seemingly have sex with Carmen, his new college friend.

Chaos-fueled clips then flash across the screen, teasing homoerotic fraternity rituals, awkward roommate run-ins, and college party debauchery.

Lastly, the 52-second clip features a hilarious cameo from a popstar, Grammy winner, and BRAT summer connoisseur Charli XCX – who also serves as the show’s executive music producer.

“You think I want to play fucking ‘Boom Clap’ at a fucking college? Are you joking?!” the beloved talent shouts.

Fortunately, fans won’t have to wait too long for the release of Overcompensating, which is set to premiere on 15 May.

In October, Skinner opened up about filming the show during his appearance on Jake Shane’s Therapuss podcast.

“It was a really, truly unbelievable experience. I feel like I learned so much about myself and the way I make things, and I was so inspired by working with the cast,” the beloved talent explained.

“I just dissociated so many times because I would be like, ‘I wrote this scene four and half years ago, and now I’m seeing an actor that I have respected my whole life doing it, and I’m kind of me but not really me and Mary Beth [Barone] kind of looks like my sister, but it’s not really her.”

The former GAY TIMES cover star went on to discuss how he approached writing his character Benny and the show’s semi-autobiographical storylines.

“I was inspired by the feelings and what happened in college to me. And then from there – I feel like it’s not that interesting to write a character that is someone exactly like you,” he said.

“They don’t really jump off the page. And it’s not as fun, it’s more fun to think of like, ‘Well, here’s his new vessel of an idea you want or a feeling you want or a relationship you want. Build a character out of that.’ So, it’s inspired by a lot of things.”

On 12 March, Prime Video finally blessed LGBTQIA+ TV enthusiasts with first-look stills from Overcompensating via a feature with Entertainment Weekly.

Social media personality Benito Skinner is set to star in a new LGBTQ+ TV show for Prime Video.

Over the last six years, the GAY TIMES cover star – also known as Benny Drama – has used his platform to make millions laugh with his pop culture parodies, short-form comedy skits, and hilarious original characters.

With his social media takeover showing no signs of slowing down, Skinner has now set his sights on the TV world with his upcoming series, Overcompensating.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the beloved social media personality has signed on to executive produce, write and star in the coming-of-age TV show.

Inspired by the comedian’s own life, the A24-produced series is set to follow Idaho football player Benny and his hilarious yet tumultuous coming out journey.

“[Overcompensating] follows Idaho football player Benny as he struggles to accept his sexuality in college, finding himself overcompensating as he tries to convince himself of something he’s not,” the official logline reads.

“Poignant, personal, and deeply funny, this ensemble comedy explores the experiences we all have in figuring ourselves out – the various personalities we try out along the way, and the journey to find the people who accept us just as we are.”

Jonah Hill’s Strong Baby Productions and pop star Charli XCX are also set to executive produce the series, with the latter handling the show’s music.

Shortly after the news was announced, Skinner took to Instagram to express his excitement over the forthcoming project.

“AH!!!!!!!!!! Been waiting to share this for the past 2 years… I am so proud of this project and can’t believe all the incredible people I get to make it with,” he wrote.

“It’s hard to describe what a dream this is, but I just want to say thank you for supporting me!!! I LOVE YOU, and I know you are going to love this show. It’s my baby and my favorite thing I’ve ever written.”

We can’t wait to see what Skinner has planned for the new series.

Bros star Billy Eichner has revealed which hunky actor almost appeared in the LGBTQ+ romantic comedy.

On 30 September, the history-making film debuted in the US to critical acclaim and even earned an 89% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

The film, which is the first gay rom-com from a major Hollywood studio, has also been lauded for its entirely LGBTQ+ principal cast – including Jim Rash, Bowen Yang, Guillermo Díaz, Ts Madison, Miss Lawrence, Harvey Fierstein, Symone and Benito Skinner, among others.

Written by Billy Eichner and Nicholas Stoller (Neighbors), with the latter also directing, Bros follows singletons Bobby Lieber (Eichner) and Aaron (Luke Macfarlane) as they navigate their commitment issues and romantic feelings.

While the film has been praised for its landmark casting and heartwarming love story, Bros has also gained recognition for its array of cameos from some of Hollywood’s biggest stars.

However, one surprising cameo from a certain hunky actor failed to make the cut due to scheduling conflicts.

In a recent interview with Yahoo Lifestyle, Eichner revealed that Hunger Games star Liam Hemsworth was set to make an appearance in the film.

“Liam Hemsworth wanted to do a cameo in the movie, and he was supposed to, and we had a whole Zoom meeting with him, and he was lovely and charming and funny, but then COVID hit again, and he couldn’t travel from Australia to just do one scene in Bros, unfortunately,” Eichner revealed.

Elsewhere in the interview, the Difficult People star shed some light on the role Hemsworth would have played and his high-profile scene partner.

“In the movie, Luke and I go see a movie called The Treasure Inside, which is a fictional movie about, you know, two closeted frontiersmen during the California gold rush of 1812 – sort of indicative of the many movies about tragic, closeted men that we get in Hollywood real straight actors play them,” he explained.

“We were going to shoot scenes from that movie, and Liam was going to be one of the tragic closeted frontiersmen. We never ended up shooting those scenes, but at one point, we were going with Liam and Nick Jonas,” he added.

Even though Hemsworth was unable to make an appearance in Bros, the film still contained some notable cameos, including Will and Grace star Debra Messing, Ben Stiller and more.

Bros is set to be released in the UK on 28 October.

Bros star and co-producer Guy Branum called out the film’s critics in a social media post.

On 30 September, the highly anticipated romantic comedy finally hit theatres in the US.

Written by Billy Eichner and Nicholas Stoller (Neighbors), with the latter also directing the film, Bros has made history as the first gay rom-com to be produced by a major Hollywood studio.

The film also features an entirely LGBTQ+ principal cast, including Jim Rash, Bowen Yang, Guillermo Díaz, Ts Madison, Miss Lawrence, Harvey Fierstien, Symone and Benito Skinner, among others.

However despite earning rave reviews from most critics, Bros received low box office numbers and criticism from some LGBTQ+ moviegoers over its story and marketing strategy.

On 4 October, Branum took to Twitter to share his two cents on the film’s critiques and box office status in a series of tweets.

“In talking about how cruelly [Billy Eichner], white, cis, rich, hot- or not-hot-enough-to-be-a-movie-star (depending on who’s tweeting) demanded the queer community support his movie, a thing that is rarely mentioned is the rest of the cast,” he wrote.

“When Nicholas Stoller and Judd Apatow gave Billy the chance to write and star in a film, they were working from an established game plan Judd had used to help build the careers of Amy Schumer Kumail Nanjiani, Seth Rogan and others.”

Branum went on to say that, unlike the aforementioned actors and their respective Apatow-produced films, Eichner wanted to cast openly LGBTQ+ performers with varying experience to help lead the movie.

“Billy took a risk convincing the straight guys and corporations to cast queer people without extensive resumes or B.O. draw, like me, in this movie. So when you pat yourself on the back for resisting the tokenising, condescending marketing for the film,” he continued.

“Also acknowledge that Billy Eichner held the door open for a lot of other, diverse queer people, and this movie doing poorly at the box office limits the opportunities which will be in our future.”

Branum’s statement came a couple days after Eichner shared his disappointment over the film’s lacklustre opening weekend on Twitter.

“Rolling Stone already has BROS on the list of the best comedies of the 21st century,” he said in a series of now-deleted tweets.

“What’s also true is that at one point, a theatre chain called Universal said they were pulling the trailer because of the gay content. (Uni convinced them not to). America, fuck yeah, etc. etc.

“That’s just the world we live in, unfortunately. Even with glowing reviews, great Rotten Tomatoes scores, an A CinemaScore etc, straight people, especially in certain parts of the country, just didn’t show up for Bros. And that’s disappointing, but it is what it is.”

Bros will be released in the UK on 28 October. You can watch the trailer here or below.

Bros producer Guy Branum opened up about his initial distrust of Nicholas Stoller directing the film’s gay sex scenes.

At the end of October, LGBTQ+ moviegoers in the UK will finally be treated to the historic queer rom-com.

Written by Billy Eichner and Stoller (Neighbors), with the latter also directing the film, Bros has been billed as the first gay rom-com to be produced by a major Hollywood studio.

The film is also set to feature an entirely LGBTQ+ principal cast, including Jim Rash, Bowen Yang, Guillermo Díaz, Ts Madison, Miss Lawrence, Harvey Fierstien, Symone and Benito Skinner, among others.

With Bros now playing in the US, co-producer Branum spoke to Page Six about the LGBTQ+ comedy and making sure the film’s straight director created “hot” sex scenes.

“I was there every day for some of the sex scenes. Our director is straight, and I was like, ‘Someone needs to tell you [if it’s] hot or not,'” he told the publication.

“I think a straight woman could do it. I think there’s some straight men who could do it… but I need to double-check Nicholas Stoller’s work.”

Towards the end of his interview, Branum praised the film for its authenticity, specifically regarding its gay club scene.

“I do love that they made a gay club seem and feel like a real gay club. I thought it was very helpful that there was 500 writhing men there the whole time,” he added.

Branum’s comments come a few weeks after Luke Macfarlane, opened up about his own experience filming the aforementioned sex scenes.

“Nowadays, there’s always an intimacy coordinator, so that’s really interesting. I think, specifically, we had an LGBT coordinator, so they were familiar with language that might be a little bit different,” Luke explained to Variety’s Mark Malkin.

“It’s like any scene with any actor, you figure it out with your scene partner; what you’re going to be comfortable with, and I’ve always been really comfortable with Billy. Comedy is funny that way, because you want to push it a little bit.”

Bros is now playing in US cinemas and due for release on 28 October in the UK.

Peacock’s critically acclaimed Queer as Folk reboot has been cancelled by the streaming service after just one season.

The story, which is a reimagining of Russell T Davies’ groundbreaking 1999 drama of the same name, follows a group of friends whose lives are transformed after a tragic shooting occurs at New Orleans’ popular gay nightclub Babylon.

Ryan O’Connell, Jesse James Keitel, Candace Grace, Johnny Sibilly, Devin Way, Fin Argus, Kim Cattrall, Benito Skinner, Ed Bedgley Jr., Nyle DiMarco and Juliette Lewis all starred in the series.

At the time of its release, the inclusive show earned rave reviews from viewers and critics, with many fans celebrating the series for its diverse LGBTQ+ cast.

However despite receiving heaps of praise, the beloved series will not be returning to Peacock for a second season.

In response to the shocking news, Queer as Folk creator Stephen Dunn opened up about the cancellation in a heartfelt Instagram post.

“It’s a rare gift in these times, and in this country, to be able to make a show as fearless and unapologetic as Queer As Folk. This experience changed our lives forever, and we’re so grateful to have found this incredible new family,” he wrote.

“We know how much it’s meant to the fans, and while we’re heartbroken we won’t get to make more episodes, we wanna thank everyone for watching and falling in love with Brodie, Mingus, Ruthie, Noah, Shar, Julian, Daddius, Bussey, Marvin, Judy and Brenda. We’re so grateful for the chance to honor our community and are so proud of this show.”

Johnny Sibilly, who plays Noah in the series, echoed similar sentiments in his own Instagram tribute.

“Thank you to the cast & crew of #QueerAsFolk for showing up to tell stories that celebrated queerness. Thank you to Stephen & Jaclyn for trusting me & showing me I could fly with this character,” he said.

“Thank you to every person who watched, wrote messages, and stopped me irl to say the show meant something to them. I’ll have this family forever & while it hurts now, I will always be so proud of what we accomplished. Keep supporting queer content y’all. It’s not promised.”

Queer as Folk’s cancellation comes just a few months after all eight episodes were released on Peacock in June.

Here’s how fans reacted to the news:

Although she’s been a major staple within the LGBTQ+ community for a number of years, Ts Madison is finally being recognised as a “voice and a global phenomenon”.

Recently, the TV personality and actress has been catapulted into the pop culture zeitgeist as a recurring judge on RuPaul’s Drag Race, with a role in the acclaimed black comedy Zola and as the host of The Ts Madison Experience, for which she made history as the first Black trans woman to star in and executive produce her own reality series.

This year alone, Madison will star in Billy Eichner’s historic gay comedy Bros, Gabrielle Union’s Netflix film The Perfect Find and AMC’s upcoming series Hush. Her iconic viral video, Bitch I’m Black, was also sampled on Beyoncé’s track Cozy. With its debut on the Billboard Hot 100, Madison and producer Honey Dijon became the first Black trans women to land a top 40 hit.

“As much as I go viral and I’m intertwined and contribute to the world by just being me, people still try to overlook me,” Madison says in the new issue of GAY TIMES. “For me, Beyoncé is the Michael Jackson of our time, honey.

“And for her to take a piece of my voice from a video that I used to combat racism and transphobia, it solidified me as a voice and a global phenomenon. […] I feel like I’m growing into RuPaul status.”

Renaissance has been lauded as one of Beyoncé’s finest albums to date, with fans and critics applauding the pop icon’s homage to the Black and queer pioneers of music and ballroom. Madison, who was unaware of Bitch I’m Black’s inclusion on Renaissance until two days before its release, says she “cried” when the album dropped.

“It meant so much to me that my voice was used in a statement piece like Cozy. I know Beyoncé watched me because there are things that I’ve done, like in the words she says, ‘Dancing in the mirror, kiss my scars because I love what they made,'” she explains.

“There’s videos of me dancing, talking about myself as a trans person with scars on my body. It’s like she took her time and she understood the voice she was using, and the statement she was making in this song, and she sang about our flag. I was overwhelmed with emotions. I thank her immensely for choosing me.”

Madison is continuing to make history with her role in Bros, which has been billed as the first gay romantic comedy from a major studio featuring an entirely LGBTQ+ principal cast. Alongside Eichner and Madison, the film stars Bowen Yang, Guillermo Díaz, Ts Madison, Miss Lawrence, Harvey Fierstien, Symone and Benito Skinner.

“Bros is speaking to the straights; we are here, we are queer honey,” says Madison. “We have love stories and we look out for our own. What I like about the movie was that they made sure to cast every person in the film of the LGBTQIA realm, even playing the straight roles. That is important because Hollywood creates stories using cis-het people.”

Written by Eichner, with Nick Stoller, who also directed the film, Bros follows Bobby Lieber (Eichner), a museum curator who is hired to write a romantic comedy about a gay couple. He eventually meets and falls in love with Aaron (Macfarlane), a macho lawyer who is described as the “gay Tom Brady”.

Madison plays a Black trans woman called Angela, who is – as Beyoncé sings on Cozy – “comfortable in her skin”. The star adds: “She’s smart. She’s witty. She talks with her eyes and her face. She’s a spunky character and basically Ts Madison as a board member. I’m funny, even when I’m silent!”

Bros is due for release 28 October in the UK.

You can read our full interview with Ts Madison from 16 September via the GAY TIMES app, Apple News+, Readly, and Flipster.

The brand new issue of GAY TIMES also features interviews with rapper/singer Dréya Mac and Queerpiphany’s chaotic duo Munroe Bergdorf and Tayce, as well as features on the wonderful world of the UK ballroom scene and a British history of Black queer spaces over the past few decades.

Billy Eichner has clarified his previous comment regarding LGBTQ+ streaming movies.

Back in August, the Difficult People star opened up to Variety about his upcoming LGBTQ+ film Bros.

During the interview, Eichner reflected on the new movie making history as the first gay rom-com to be produced by a major Hollywood studio.

“I told myself to look around and appreciate how rare and magical this moment is because you are making a movie that looks and feels like all the romantic comedies you grew up loving, but you’re doing it as a gay man,” he told the news outlet.

“And this is not an indie movie. This is not some streaming thing, which feels disposable, or which is like one of a million Netflix shows. I need to appreciate that ‘This is a historic moment, and somehow, you’re at the center of it. You helped create it.'”

However shortly after the interview went live, Eichner faced backlash from social media users, with some claiming that his comments were dismissive of other LGBTQ+ projects like Fire Island and Happiest Season.

In response to the criticism, the American Horror Story actor took to Twitter and clarified his comments before apologising to fans.

“I want to clarify what I said about streaming content in Variety. I was not at all referring to the quality or monumental impact of streaming films, I was referring to the way that, historically, LGBTQ+ content has often been considered niche and disregarded by Hollywood,” he tweeted.

“I have been openly gay since the beginning of my career over 20 years ago, at a time when that was very challenging. And I am very proud Bros is one of many projects – theatrical, streaming, online, etc – where so many of us are finally getting to tell our own LGBTQ+ stories.

“Being an openly gay man and a loud and proud part of the LGBTQ+ community is one of the things I am most proud of in my whole damn life. And from the bottom of my heart, I truly am so sorry if I inadvertently offended or insulted anyone. I really am. Thank you.”

Written by the Billy on the Street star and Nick Stoller (Neighbors), Bros follows Bobby Lieber (Eichner) and Aaron (Luke Macfarlane) as they navigate their commitment problems and blossoming romantic relationship.

The film is set to feature an entirely LGBTQ+ principal cast, including Jim Rash, Bowen Yang, Guillermo Díaz, Ts Madison, Miss Lawrence, Harvey Fierstien, Symone and Benito Skinner, among others.

Bros is due for release 28 October in the UK and 30 September in the US.
