You can spend a lifetime here and not scratch the surface, but here’s where we’d start

WORDS RHYS THOMAS

Back in 2013, if it were an independent country Mexico City (known variously as Ciudad de México, CDMX and DF), would have been the fifth-largest economy in Latin America. It is simply massive, and has one of the most varied, sensorially stimulating energies you’ll find. An architectural paradise, a food-lover’s utopia and, above all, a chaotic beautiful unforgettable place to experience. So, how should one experience it? Let’s begin.

The queer scene has always been vital but has grown exponentially in the 2020s. In terms of legislation, equal marriage has been legal in the city since 2009 (the first place in Mexico to do so) and it also recognises same-sex unions. This makes the city generally tolerant and accepting. It’s recommended to stick to neighbourhoods which have a friendlier reputation though, as sadly like anywhere, hate crimes exist. For that reason, we’d stay in and stay mainly around Juarez, Roma, Condesa, Polanco, Escandón, and Santa Maria la Ribera. PDA is very much a thing through the city though, so in these places especially, you will see queer affection all around.

Zona Rosa

The pink zone is in Juarez, and has been present in one form or another there since the 1950s. This is the hub of the capital’s gay community, and is where Pride is hosted each June. In this area alone there’s over 50 LGBTQ+ nightlife venues and bars. If you want to call one small part of CDMX home, this will do very well. If you’re not sure you’re there, check the floor, its iconic pink cobblestone streets will indicate home. Calle Amberes is the main street in the area, you’ll find everything you need. Of course, for the more alternatively curious, other places might be more to your taste.

Underground parties

There’s obviously a bunch of recurring parties in Mexico City, and a good swathe of them are LGBTQ+, some are more catered to gay men only. Fixxion and Por Detroit are more for anyone wanting a good night, focussed on more eurocentric rave ideas than anything specifically queer, though very accommodating and sometimes including dark rooms in the latter’s case. Brutal is another night, techno focussed and a little more queer. CERDOS is a new kid on the block, you can locate it on Instagram. And then, of course, there’s Pervert, the biggest on the scene – very much a dance and fuck spot, darkrooms and late nights guaranteed. Generally these will happen in the more progressive neighbourhoods, but a cab can be advised when they’re more obscurely hidden, or you’re travelling at rogue hours. For something more permanently on, Tom’s leather bar will cater to men (and is, for those interested, predominantly dark room).

La Perla

For something to tick both the party and queer history itch, La Perla. A cabaret open Fridays and Saturdays, which has been running since 1946 (peaking in popularity in the 1990s). You’ll want to rock up early to get a good table, as early as 9pm, things truly kick off from 11.

Sodome

Between Roma and Polanco, you’ll find this unassuming sauna that has become something of a party destination, even hosting boiler room events. It’s CDMX’s only European style bath house, but also has a lobby which becomes a dancefloor, an upstairs containing a foam room and a (very active) dark room – you may see these called Cuarto Oscuro when there. There’s bars throughout, and of course, steam rooms and Turkish baths. It isn’t the cheapest entry, but contains a world of ways to unwind (wildly), all night long. For a more traditional bath house, Baños Finisterre is accessible and also in a safe area. It is listed as a public toilet on Google, it’s often quite sparsely populated due to the size, but is also a good place for secluded, intimate cruising.

FLINTA-friendly spots

While there’s a few male-only venues, most do have at least days if not generally open doors to all genders. Kinky Bar (formerly Lipstick) is also a great established bar – Thursday nights are supposed to be more lesbian-themed, La Purisima is also a favoured spot among locals who are not male, as is Revuelta Queer House.

Drag

There’s loads, but Club Roshell is a great place to head for. Super friendly, super energetic, this is exactly how you’d imagine Mexico City doing a drag night. Staff have even been known to help you top up make-up. A social clun in theory, this space does everything from a quiet drink to comedy nights to sweaty dancefloors.

A brief note on opening times

It’ll likely save you at least once on the trip if you check venue Instagram pages regularly in case there is a last minute change of plan.

More leisurely activity

Of course it doesn’t all have to be parties. Mexico City is home to more museums than you’ll ever manage to visit, for example, as well as gorgeous brutalist and art deco architecture, and of course centuries of rich and varied history.

Among the most popular attractions (and worth visiting) are Zocalo, Chapultepec Park, the Palacio de Bellas Artes, and the Museo Frida Kahlo. Teotihuacan, a well preserved ancient city short trip out of the city, is also worth a day. There are dedicated LGBTQ+ centers with exhibitions on also.

Queer safety

Despite a thriving muxe population in the Oaxaca region, Mexico is considered the second most dangerous country in the world to be trans, according to many human rights groups.

While Mexico City will be relatively tolerant, it is still important to stress that in 2020 the United Nations wroteTrans women in Mexico City [are] an often persecuted group”. Sticking to LGBTQ+ accepting areas and travelling in groups is highly recommended.

Also, public drinking is illegal in Mexico – and it’s reportedly the instigated for less than savoury confrontations with police. Worth remembering, especially where parties spill out onto the streets.

“Oh we do love to be beside the seaside, oh we do love to be beside the sea!”

WORDS RHYS THOMAS

The south coast of England has clusters of quaint villages, queer landmarks, and welcoming locals. Here, we’ve curated a guide for how to explore this lovely pocket of the UK, the GAY (TIMES) way.

Brighton

Essential for: those who like some seaside with their queer city (so everyone really…)

The obvious starting point. Many queer men were initially drawn to Brighton to visit the enormous numbers of soldiers garrisoned in the town during the Napoleonic Wars. This was the beginning of the place as a haven for the LGBTQ community, and today the city is often referred to as the LGBTQ+ capital of the country.

To play

Naturally, it’s an accommodating place to visit and live, with an accepting culture at large. It’s also a great place for enjoying the sea, quirky independent shops, bars and eateries – many of which are clustered in The Lanes, and on Preston Street. Some of our favourites include Bincho Yakitori, The Hole in the Wall, Baby Bao, and Halisco. The new-ish Sea Lanes is also worth a visit for an outdoor pool, a whole host of health and wellness classes, and also cocktails in serene seaside surroundings.

While a great place to visit at any time of the year, Brighton Pride attracts around half a million people across the weekend, this year’s Pride takes place on August 2 and 3, which makes for a fun if busy time to check out what the city has to offer.

For a Pride-esque feeling outside of that weekend, Centre Stage is an ideal place to visit. Open seven days a week, the LGTBQ+ cabaret and show venue is the heart of Brighton’s “gay village” and general queer offerings – they do Sunday Roasts from 12-4 on Sundays also!

To stay

Kemptown, however, is the heart of Brighton’s LGBTQIA+ community. Just east of the city centre, the area has a relaxed community feel, making it an ideal place to stay and a relaxing area to feel home in when you’re feeling less inclined to be in the city proper. We’d recommend the gorgeous Drakes Hotel, a four-star boutique right on the seafront in a pair of Regency townhouses. It’s as good as it sounds.

Accessibility

Brighton does have steep hills, but most of the things to explore are among the relatively flat seafront. The train station connects you to London, and is fairly central, though up a hill from the seafront.

Hastings

Essential for: bougie trinket hoarders, relocating away from city life forever with your tiny impractical gorgeous dog

When it comes to lovely south coast places to visit, Brighton does a good job of projecting a pavilion-shaped shadow over most other places. Hastings is well worth visiting though, and we’re here to shed some light on why.

To play

Hastings is full of creative talent, it seems to be a place where many have flocked for a more peaceful time of things, and the space to simply make the things they want to make. Consequently, the place is a dream for window browsing, and generally has a lot of well-preserved beauty to admire, whether it’s in the pubs (especially First Inn Last Out) or the exterior of old houses (including those opposite said pub).

Hastings has two areas really, old town and … (well) new town but both are very charming. Trinity Street is the cute hub of the not old town, and is home to Stooge Coffee which is both a specialty coffee shop and a ramen restaurant, the beautiful homeware store Dyke & Dean, and bar/venue The Printworks. There’s often food markets, and a variety of independent shops to spend time browsing and discovering too.

On the more blatantly queer front, Hastings Queer History Collective is well worth your time. The group of dedicated volunteers formed in 2020, and is committed to collecting, preserving, and sharing the queer history of Hastings and the surrounding area. You can learn more about visiting here.

And for real tourist musts, there’s the pier, Hastings Castle, Hastings Contemporary, and East Cliff Railway. They promise a variety of very gorgeous visual treats.

To stay

Hastings House B&B would be our pick. There’s seaside views, calm and luxury decor. It’s an ideal place to weather a storm, or to enjoy a coffee overlooking a beautiful sunny day on sea.

Visiting Times

Hastings is quite a sleepy spot, and most places aren’t open early in the week. It’s one to visit for a long weekend, for sure.

Accessibility

Given the rickety old vibe of the place, some roads are narrow, and there are a few hills, but generally Hastings and its train station are accessible to get to.

Dungeness

Essential for: the artist in you, feeling very profound feelings

Dungeness is a headland on the coast of Kent. It’s completely flat, mainly a shingle beach, there’s an old light house, a few houses in a straight line, and a general sense of being at the edge of the world. It’s a memorable and stunning place, somewhere you will always remember. And the main attraction, well worth the trip on its own, is Prospect Cottage.

Prospect Cottage, Dungeness

Prospect Cottage was the final home and sanctuary of Derek Jarman, a pioneering artist, filmmaker, gay rights activist and gardener. The place is often referred to as a site of pilgrimage, and when there it’s hard to not feel the profound power and emotion of the place and its significance pour through you. The slightly strange, almost dystopian, surroundings add to the experience.

Visiting times

Varied, it’s best to check the website and to book in advance.

Accessibility

The cottage is at ground level, though on uneven road; public transport to the building is very limited and so we would advise a car.

Price

£20 Standard, some concessions available.

To stay

If you’re taking a car, you could drive here from Hastings and back pretty comfortably. But if you wanted to stay, we’d recommend Shingle House. Inspired and placed neatly in the area, this modern architectural beauty right on the shingle is inspired by the old tarred exteriors of the fisherman’s hutsdotted across the land. You’ll feel completely at home, and on holiday, all at once.

Behold: a totally subjective guide to the queerest landmarks in London, Hell Island’s occasionally redeemable capital city.

WORDS RHYS THOMAS

Have you ever stomped about a city like a feral rat with a penchant for iced vanilla matcha? Stomp, clack, stomp, the ice rattling everywhere, wired headphones in, pushing straight cis men in suits out of the damn way? Well, one sunny weekend, I did.

I had no agenda for my tirade of steps. But then I decided on one: visit like all of the queer landmarks across London. Because, well, why not. They’re there, they’re queer, etc. and so here’s where I went…

Hampstead Heath

Where else can we begin but the Somme of the culture wars, the centre of the battle, Hampstead Heath (we were here first!). Despite recently being the focus of a poster campaign shaming cruisers, it’s still a queer-friendly haven and a lovely place to get some steps in. The ponds, particularly, are known for their salacious stories of hook-ups. In reality, they’re sweet, freeing and friendly places to lounge or swim. I did not swim, for wild swimming isn’t chic to me. I marched on…

Virginia Woolf’s houses (all of them)

Woolf and I have a lot in common, most of it unfavourable to our wellbeing. Another is that we’ve lived in a fair few houses in London. Though I imagine she was less plagued by the rental market of the time. Blue Plaques adorn the houses in which she spent time, from her birthplace which is on one of the impossibly expensive and pristine roads near Hyde Park where all the embassies are based (22 Hyde Park Gate) through to Mecklenburgh Square which she departed when it was bombed during World War II, never returning to London. This could be an entire day’s walking alone, and she’s worth it.

La Camionera

Where else would one stop for a coffee break? La Camionera is one of two FLINTA-owned lesbian bars in London (the other of which being Goldies, which we also recommend), you may remember it popping off on TikTok in June 2024. At the weekends it’s open from 10am, and visiting in the quieter hours is a really lovely way to experience it and enjoy a haven of your own. There’s also great wine but try not to run into your ex-girlfriend…

Alan Turing Statue, Paddington

Paddington might be synonymous with that furry royal bootlicker in the red hat, but there’s actually a reason to step foot here on our travels: The statue of everyone’s favourite mathematical genius, Alan Turing, who was born in nearby Maida Vale and would later be resurrected by Tia Kofi on season two of Ru Paul’s Drag Race UK

Gays The Word

The UK’s oldest LGBTQIA+ bookstore, founded by a gay socialist group in 1979, is in central London and remains open today. The place is steeped in a library of its own history, has hosted readings and evenings with just about everyone, and of course has just about any and every book you can imagine – including rare original editions. Gays The Word is a bastion of the UK’s queer community, and a sacred place to spend an hour or two. You should go here and marvel at the first edition of Audre Lorde’s Need, for example.

Oscar Wilde Statue, Strand

Get ready for another statue! This time, Ireland’s most flamboyant playwright, and a true icon of queer rights – even defending his relationships in court. Oscar Wilde, of course. Fittingly it’s pretty near the theatre district he constantly left gagged.

Islington South Library

More literary ideas! Joe Orton. Wrote dramas as dark as his life, had a life as dark as his dramas. What could have been… I will always howl at the defacing he did to books at this library a small walk from where he and his boyfriend lived on Noel Road (not endorsing crime, by the way!). A personal highlight is the baboon placed inside a rose within the Collins Guide to Roses, you can view more of the covers at the Islington Local History Centre.

Dalston Superstore

And then, the night is calling. This means Dalston Superstore, obviously. “East London’s notorious big queer pleasure palace” as they refer to it.

The Grapes

Well how tiring that all was, I thought. And so, I went to Limehouse for a little refreshment near the river. The Grapes, where else! Sir Ian McKellen’s very own pub. It’s got a 500 year history though, even featuring in Dickens’ Our Mutual Friend. The pub is something of a local haunt but also very welcoming and joyful, a great place for a quiet drink and a spot of classic pub food. There are also very well loved pub quizzes here, and sometimes Sir Ian will host them.

From its breathtaking coral reefs to the lively outdoor markets, Mauritius is your next must-see destination.

WORDS BY PHEBE BARNUM-BOBB
SPECIAL THANKS TO CHRISTOPHER GANNON, FINN PARTNERS AND SUNLIFE

Mauritius, a tropical paradise in the Indian Ocean, is known for its white sand beaches, luxury resorts and vibrant culture. While many visit for its natural beauty, it’s increasingly becoming a haven for queer travellers seeking relaxation.

In October 2023, the Supreme Court of Mauritius ruled that the country’s ban on same-sex intimacy was unconstitutional, marking a significant step forward for LGBTQIA+ rights. This landmark decision highlighted Mauritius as a democratic state, affirming that personal privacy should be respected. Although same-sex marriage is yet to be recognised, queer people are loosely protected from discrimination in areas such as employment and the provision of goods and services.

Mauritius is also one of 96 countries to have signed the “Joint Statement on Ending Acts of Violence Related to Human Rights Violations Based on Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity” at the United Nations, which condemns violence and discrimination against LGBTQIA+ people.

Though safety is undoubtedly a concern for queer travellers, Mauritius proves to be a welcoming destination. From the moment we arrived, soaking in the warmth of the Indian Ocean sun, we felt the island’s inviting and transformative energy – enter Belinda from The White Lotus.

Before our flight, we enjoyed a relaxing stop at Gatwick’s Plaza Premium Lounge, offering unlimited food and drinks, with free entry for children – a perfect pre-flight treat and ideal for the boujee queers!

Upon arrival, we were whisked away to Long Beach Resort, a Sunlife property. While there are plenty of resorts across the island, few match the luxury of this 5-star retreat. Located on the island’s east coast, it offers a mix of modern elegance and peaceful surroundings, making it ideal for queer travellers looking for both comfort and inclusivity.

The stunning contemporary suites are filled with light, vibrant decor, and plenty of space. Each room has its own private outdoor area overlooking either the gardens, pool or the renowned Belle Mare Beach.

There’s an abundance of amenities, too. For dinner, guests can enjoy dining options from one of the resort’s five restaurants, offering everything from world-class Asian cuisine to pure Italian indulgence.

And it doesn’t end there. Sunlife has four splendid resorts on the island, all “full of life and wonderfully one-of-a-kind”. For the luxury lovers and honeymooners, Sugar Beach is the place to be; La Pirogue is perfect for culture vultures; and Ambre caters to the escape chasers. Each has its own unique personality, atmosphere, and picturesque scenery.

If, like many of us, holiday is a time to lean into your type-B self – letting the adventure fall at your feet and not travelling too far – there’s a range of activities you can take part in right on your doorstep. Sunlife’s latest “Come Alive Collection” offers experiences ranging from thrills to relaxation, allowing you to experience the country without even leaving the resort.

Sapphics, forget the playlist for your lover – come home with a sustainable (yes!) handmade souvenir from the Glass Studio. Transform recycled glass bottles from the hotel into a personalised handmade gift – c’mon DIY dykes! Whether it’s a keyring, bracelet, necklace, or ring, connect with your artistic side and take home a one-of-a-kind piece.

Calling all the London Lime bikers – it’s time to take your skills to the other side of the pond! Swap East London for the East Coast of Mauritius on an electric bike adventure. Pick your own path: the Flacq market, gliding through a must-see village with “local charm” on an 18km route, or delve into the island’s heart on a 22km route where you’ll travel through Bras d’Eau National Park until you arrive at the Sagar Shiv Hindu Temple.

Would it be a 5-star resort holiday without a massage? GLOW is Sunlife’s new spa and wellness offering that provides an authentic Mauritian experience. Based on three pillars of wellbeing – elemental energy, nurturing energy and creative energy – GLOW offers guests the opportunity to “rediscover your inner radiance”. Need we say more? If you’re tired of carrying the weight of the world on your shoulders, get an authentic Mauritian massage for a purely indulgent experience.

Many escape to Mauritius for complete relaxation, but of course, exploration is a must!

Mauritius is home to some of the most breathtaking beaches in the world. From the powdery white sands of Belle Mare Beach to the crystal-clear waters of Le Morne, the island offers an idyllic backdrop for any holiday. Few compare to the enchanting views of Île aux Cerfs. Just off the mainland, this untouched island, only reachable by boat or helicopter, boasts glistening white sand beaches and crystal-clear waters. For golfing gays (you do exist, right?), there’s an 18-hole championship golf course. And if you simply want to soak in your surroundings, there are three authentic Mauritian restaurants.

If you’re searching for more hustle and bustle, head to the Central Flacq Market for a taste of the culture. It’s the largest outdoor market on the island, located in the northeast. You’ll find fresh produce, an array of spices, freshly cooked street food and a number of stalls offering souvenirs. Don’t forget to grab that extra-special fridge magnet for your mum or the 103rd extra-baggy pyjama top that will inevitably be stolen by that one-night stand.

Now, it’s completely understandable that sending yourself off to a country that doesn’t recognise same-sex marriage might be, well, far from ideal if you’re not straight or cis-passing. Our key takeaway is that Mauritius is a welcoming, inviting and kind country, filled with culture and diversity. If you want to live your The White Lotus fantasy (minus the death, incest, and drama), this could just be the place for you.

Here’s what makes The Riviera Maya EDITION at Kanai a spellbinding and exciting hotel and why you should add it to your travel bucket list.

WORDS BY GAY TIMES

Picture the lush mangroves of the Riviera Maya, a 620-acre nature reserve which stretches toward the coast and meets a kilometer of pristine white-sand beachfront and crystal clear turquoise sea. An area that is practically untouched, abundant with rainforest plants, palms, cacti, tropical fruit trees and flowers; home to hundreds of species of birds, as well as sea turtles.

Now imagine, tucked within, just noticeable through the lushness and the trees, is a stunning tranquil, luxury hotel. Well remarkably, deep inside Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula, EDITION has managed to do just that. The result is a place of spellbinding tranquility like you’ve never seen before.

The entrance itself is a nod to Mexico’s indigenous past – designed to resemble a cenote, the hotel’s grand entryway feels like a portal to another world. Once inside, every detail has been carefully curated to reflect the country’s deep-rooted and unique Yucatan culture. From the earthy textures to the fluid architectural lines that mimic the natural landscape, it’s hard to not feel like you’re somewhere completely timeless and natural – while of course enveloped in the luxury markings of an EDITION hotel.

From the moment you step into your suite, the biggest detox of your life falls upon you.  The rooms demonstrate how much of modern luxury is in fact a return to basics, the desire to escape it all: neutral tones, natural textures, and floor-to-ceiling windows which open up to breathtaking views of the mangroves. You are at one with the elements, you are grounded. You are every zen meme you have ever encountered, and you will never want to see a screen again.

Obviously, the furnishings and bedding are gorgeous. EDITION’s signature Le Labo bath products, along with the oversized soaking baths and rainfall shower only add to the calm you will feel. It’s a space designed for absolute relaxation, where you can wake up to the sounds of nature, wind down with perfectly dim lighting, and fall asleep under the glow of stars,

This sounds incredible, but is EDITION Riviera Maya queer-friendly?

It is! The resort welcomes LGBTQ+ travellers with open arms, offering a space that feels sophisticated and warm. Whether you’re looking for a tranquil escape or a vibrant social scene, the hotel staff go above and beyond to ensure every guest feels at home. Mexico’s Riviera Maya has long been a favourite for queer travellers seeking sun-drenched serenity, and this EDITION property makes it all the more special.

Fabulous, so there’s a queer scene here to explore?

Along with the stunning beaches and luxurious resorts you’d associate with Riviera Maya, there is in fact a growing LGBTQ+ scene. For those wanting to experience a queer-friendly escape beyond the hotel, the coastal town Playa del Carmen is a short drive away. Here you’ll find the lively Club 69, a favourite among the local LGBTQ+ community for its drag performances and energetic dance floor.

For a more relaxed evening, Bar 25, an intimate cocktail lounge known for its mezcal-infused drinks and stylish crowd is friendly to all. If you’re lucky, your visit might coincide with one of Playa’s underground queer pop-up events, which range from beachside full-moon parties to art-driven soirées in hidden jungle locations. Tulum, another town not too far away, offers LGBTQ+ travellers an alternative scene, with bohemian beach clubs and wellness retreats embracing the queer community. And when you wish to unwind in complete calm, there is, of course, the hotel you’ll forever call home.

What else is at EDITION Riviera Maya?

As well as impossible serenity and a truly special, near-sacred, atmosphere, this EDITION has all the glamour and chic comforts you associate with the brand globally. Two of Mexico’s most renowned young chefs pioneered the concept in their own restaurants on-site, KI’IS (which means ‘Zest’ in Maya) and SO’OL Beach Club. You can expect tasting menus that take you through the history and modernity of Mexican flavours, local ingredients elevated to art, varieties of vegetables you’ve never had before, and a tres leches cake that lingers in your memory long after the last bite.

Make sure to reserve at table at KI’IS during your stay. This isn’t any average hotel restaurant. The experience is top-notch. Leave decision making at the door and go for the tasting menu – you won’t be disappointed.

Drinks are just as exceptional, with a focus on Mexican spirits (particularly mezcal). These can be found at the restaurants of course, but also at the hotel’s bar, and poolside. Speaking of the pool – unlike the bright blue you might expect, EDITION’s swimming pool is a striking green, designed to mirror the surrounding sea and seamlessly blend with the environment. A small touch that goes a long way to making this place feel truly special.

That attention to detail is everywhere. The staff don’t just meet expectations, they anticipate them. By the second day, they had our favourite cocktails memorised, greeting us with personalised drinks before we even had to ask. It’s that kind of warmth that transforms a hotel stay into something unforgettable.

In every EDITION, there is a grand interpretation of the Lobby Bar. If you are an EDITION fan like us, the one here is a cross between The London EDITION’s grandeur and The Madrid EDITION’s expanse – the result is a huge space, triple height ceiling that manages to – remarkably – feel intimate at the same time.

Responsibility…

Creating such an extraordinary and isolated experience means balancing many, many elements. This oasis is in an untouched part of the world which is beautiful, but of course, means developing in that part of the world. The EDITION team were hyper-conscious of this when working with architects and designers, and ensured its commitment to preserving the natural state of the area was unwavering.

Minimal construction and environmental footprint mean the walls are designed to look like the land, full of textures and ripples, this preserves the natural beauty of the area. They are crafted from local limestone and sustainably sourced bamboo, both of which blend into the area seamlessly. The EDITION team told us only 10% of the land within the mangroves has been developed, meaning the resort feels completely immersed in nature, because it truly is.

Such an endeavour can only successfully be accomplished with respect, and The EDITION has done so – from its design to conservation efforts that protect and preserve local mangroves, lagoons, tropical beaches. We’re sure people who travel here will feel compelled to respect the land in the same way.

Best for:

The complete escape, unforgettable experiences, and unparalleled nature fused with impeccable luxury

Book it:

Rooms start from around $800 per night or redeem with Marriott Bonvoy points. Visit editionhotels.com/riviera-maya for more information.

This isn’t just another beachfront hotel in Miami – it’s more of an artistic haven; the sort of glam mansion a legacy Hollywood star may flock to for the summer. There’s even art from the likes of Andy Warhol and Jean-Michel Basquiat on the walls, as we said, special.

We shouldn’t gloss over the idea of ‘another beachfront hotel’ – this is by itself a very lavish and incredibly chic bit of real estate to temporarily call home; but again the W hotel manages to offer something beyond the ordinary. Here, *every* room boasts an ocean view, and has floor to ceiling windows to make sure the view is as panoramic as can be.

Waking up to that shimmering blue horizon never gets old. If that wasn’t enough of a sunkissed shine added to the holiday, you can take the view in while sitting on your private balconies, of course. Floridian orange juice is prized, you know this, but tasting it every morning on that balcony. Oh reader, it hits different.

The W hotel interiors are always special

Miami’s golden hour energy and glossy sophistication is considered within the interior, making this a prime of example of how ‘bringing the outside in’ can be so wonderful. The interiors lean into a chic, cosmopolitan aesthetic – think dark wood floors, plush king-sized beds, and sleek marble bathrooms with rainfall showers and Bliss Spa amenities. Opt for a suite and you’ll enjoy even more indulgence, from sprawling living spaces to your very own outdoor plunge pool.

W hotel is literally on Miami beach – you step outside and, given the hotel is located on Collins Avenue, you’re greeted by a tropical oasis of palm trees with the natural sand and sea scent behind them. You’ll also find a sprawling pool-side deck designed for both relaxation and socialising. Just beyond this, you have all the delights of Miami waiting for you.

Fabulous, but what are the LGBTQ+ things to experience in Miami?

Miami’s LGBTQ+ scene is electric, and guests at the W South Beach are perfectly positioned to experience it all. Just a short stroll away, you’ll find iconic nightlife spots like Twist, a legendary multilevel gay club, and Palace Bar, famed for its outrageous drag brunches. If you’re in town during Miami Beach Pride, the city transforms into a non-stop celebration of queer culture, with parades, parties, and performances spilling onto every corner. Art lovers should look to head out to Miami for the OUTshine LGBTQ+ Film Festival, a revered festival which showcases powerful queer storytelling. For those looking to experience a chill and queer Miami at any time of the year should visit Hôtel Gaythering, a boutique hotel and gay bar known for its trivia nights and social events. Whatever your vibe, Miami goes far beyond the beach, and makes leaving such glorious accommodation not too frightening at all.

Okay, and general Miami nightlife? Where should I go?

Honestly, you don’t even need to leave the hotel to experience some of the city’s best dining. MR CHOW is a must, delivering high-energy Beijing buisine with a side of theatre (and some seriously good hand-pulled noodles) it’s the sort of spot even locals will come and enjoy. For something more casual yet equally delicious, The Restaurant at W South Beach (that’s its name) serves a menu created with the local coast in mind: authentic ceviche and grilled seafood, with bespoke cocktails that pair just perfectly. Over at the Living Room bar, the scene is a chic, low-lit affair, perfect for pre-game cocktails or winding down with a negroni nightcap.

For LGBTQ+ travellers looking to experience Miami in all its glittering, sun-drenched glory, the W South Beach is a no-brainer. It’s stylish without being pretentious, energetic without being chaotic, and luxurious while still feeling like a place that lets you properly unwind. Whether you’re mingling at the pool, dancing into the early hours, or simply soaking in the South Beach scenery, this is a place where unforgettable moments are made.

And yes, don’t worry, W Hotels has long been a champion of inclusivity, making it a safe and stylish haven for LGBTQ+ travellers. From its hiring policies to its partnerships with LGBTQ+ organisations, this is a hotel where guests can feel completely at ease. Whether you’re travelling solo, with a partner, or as part of a larger queer entourage, you’ll find a space where you can fully be yourself, surrounded by a like-minded and vibrant community.

Anything else the hotel has to offer?

We’ve barely touched the surface, following a $30 million upgrade in 2020 the hotel has become one of the most decked out places like… anywhere. The AWAY Spa is almost 10,000 square feet; there’s rooftop basketball, tennis, and pickleball courts (the only ones in the area), and even a ballroom. This is in addition to various social activities hosted by the hotel, from cigar tastings to yoga, they cater to every desire.

Best For:

LGBTQ+ jet-setters, beach lovers, and those who like their luxury with a side of high-energy fun.

From its prime location to its perfect blend of industrial design and homely comfort, the Gansevoort hotel in New York City must be on your radar.

WORDS BY GAY TIMES

Few places have a history like Manhattan’s Meatpacking District: a westside area that’s been home to some of New York’s most raucous debauchery, history, and glamour. From industrial hub to squatter central to the edge and heart of all things artistic in the big apple, no place is quite like it. Sex clubs, art museums, slaughterhouses, and Alexander McQueen stores have all called the place home. And all mere minutes away from the old money West Village!

Cool, so what’s in the area today?

The Gansevoort, named after the southernmost point of the district, is perfectly situated for those who want to explore the best of New York City. Literal steps away from urban park the High Line, there’s few better ways to ease yourself into the city that never sleeps. Beyond that, but still local, is The Whitney Museum of American Art, a host of high end retail, and of course there’s the cobbled roads and old-industrial architecture that act as the architectural soul of the place.

Okay, so why stay at the Gansevoort?

As well as the prime location, the Gansevoort Meatpacking is a perfect blend of industrial design and homely comfort. Floor-to-ceiling windows flood the space with natural light while offering stunning views of the Hudson River or the Manhattan skyline, in the rooms, dark wooden panels and large steel beams offer that irresistible combination of natural softness and human energy.

Luxury is guaranteed of course, the beds will have you thinking it’s impossible to not sleep in this city, while the bathrooms feature rainfall showers and high-end bath amenities that save you packing yours. Should you decide to opt for a suite, you’ll enjoy additional space with stylish lounge areas, oversized soaking tubs, and private terraces which make for a perfect private place to unwind from the city, should you want it.

Facilities are bountiful also – the gyms are so equipped they have innovative exercise mirror technology from Lululemon. The rooftop bar is popular with guests and locals alike, on-site restaurants including Le Coin and the rooftop Omakase restaurant Saishin, are routinely booked out. There’s even a private member’s club concept, Seven24 Collective, on-site, making the hotel a genuine part of the city, somewhere that forms relationships and not just fleeting visits.

Amazing! Is The Gansevoort Meatpacking queer friendly?

Of course! The space has been a mainstay for LGBTQ+ travellers looking for a chic and welcoming place in New York City. With its prime location in one of Manhattan’s most vibrant neighbourhoods, the hotel offers an atmosphere of inclusivity and sophistication. The staff is effortlessly welcoming, ensuring that every guest feels at home, while the hotel’s collaborations with LGBTQ+ organisations further solidify its commitment to the community. Whether you’re here for Pride, a weekend escape, or just to immerse yourself in the city’s electrifying energy, the Gansevoort is an ideal base.

And obviously New York City is a good place for queer people to visit?

New York City’s LGBTQ+ scene is incredibly diverse, and staying at the Gansevoort puts you right in the heart of some of the most unique queer experiences the city has to offer. While the West Village is well-known for its history, dive a little deeper and you’ll find hidden gems that go beyond the usual landmarks. If you’re after an intimate cabaret experience, check out The Duplex, a legendary piano bar with nightly performances by rising Broadway stars and drag artists.

For something a little more underground, wander into The Leslie-Lohman Museum of Art, dedicated exclusively to queer art and culture, featuring exhibits that push the boundaries of LGBTQ+ storytelling. Love literature? Stop by the Bureau of General Services—Queer Division, an independent queer bookstore inside the LGBT Center, where you can catch poetry readings, book launches, and thought-provoking discussions. If your visit coincides with one of the lesser-known queer events, like the annual Dyke March or the Inferno gay square dance nights, you’ll get a rare glimpse into the city’s thriving LGBTQ+ subcultures. As you may expect, NYC really has it all.

Best for:

Architectural queers; emerging culture fiends; a flat white in nature the morning after the poppers…

Rooms start from around $450 per night. Visit gansevoorthotelgroup.com for more information.

From its luxurious spa services to its stunning Swiss Alps location, here’s everything you need to know about W Verbier.

WORDS BY GAY TIMES

W Verbier refers to itself as an alpine paradise, and the accolades (world’s best ski hotel eight years running, making the top 100 Hotels & Resorts of the World 2023 list among others) support this description well. But truly, if there’s a phrase we’d call synonymous to the W brand, it’s wow

W Hotels can be found throughout the globe, from Abu Dhabi to Taipei, London to Los Angeles but fitting this luxury resort into the Swiss Alps seemed extraordinarily ambitious. We were skeptical: a hotel brand that is associated with dark, moody colours, expansive facilities and trendy nightlife all within an Alpine chalet?

Of course, we didn’t need to fear. W’s first-ever alpine-based resort works wonderfully. Verbier is a Swiss Mountain Resort two hours drive from Geneva. Long associated with the rich and famous, supercars and luxury boutiques line the winding village roads naturally, the landscape is a snowglobe in a department store, only better, because it’s real. You can touch it, smell it, and most importantly, ski down it. W Hotels figured, you should be able to luxuriously stay there too. And so, W Verbier was born.

How to get to W Verbier

Travelling to the resort from Geneva airport can be done a few ways. We decided to skip the car hire and book the train, which is affordable, eco-conscious, and convenient. The Intercity platforms are just minutes from the airport exit, and head close to Verbier’s base.

Via train, this route has the additional benefit of beautiful scenery, running alongside the majority of Lake Geneva (there are far too many stunning moments to capture), and then up toward the mountains. Of course, being on a train, you can access this in comfort, not having to check rear view mirrors the whole time and as with most countries in Europe, the public transport is exceptionally reliable. After just a few hours, a small Mountain train hikes up the hillside towards Le Chalet, and the gondola to Verbier, where the holiday officially begins.

W Verbier at a glance

The first glimpse of the hotel can be seen from the gondola – a spectacular rotating W glistening against the sun, with the chalets of the hotel dotted around it. If there’s a more glam way to arrive at a hotel, we’re not sure we’ve experienced it!

Once checked in, the experience only gets better. W Verbier is designed to fuse sleek modernity with warm alpine charm. The effect is a retreat which exudes a welcoming yet ultra-luxe energy: crackling fireplaces, low-lit lounges, and deep leather seating make sure you feel as warm as a post-ski cocoa, while the floor-to-ceiling windows offer dramatic views of the snowy peaks beyond.

The theme continues in the bedroom, wooden walls and exposed beams are complemented by bold accent furniture, plush bedding, and floor-to-ceiling glass doors that lead out to private balconies. The bathrooms feature deep soaking tubs and rainfall showers which make the wind down from a day of adventure and into après-ski all the more seamless.

… and speaking of après-ski, W Verbier delivers it like no other. Whether you’re in the mood for a chic calm cocktail or a vibrant party, you’ll find what you are looking for. W Off Piste is for those looking to enjoy drinks while wrapped up warm as DJs spin against a backdrop of snow-dusted mountains. For something more intimate, W Living Room offers a cosy and glamorous space for handcrafted cocktails, fine wines, and an expertly curated selection of Swiss cheese and charcuterie. Verbier also hosts Snow Pride, which makes the place very attuned to queer needs, and provides an ideal time to visit annually – W Hotels has long been a champion of inclusivity, making it a safe and stylish haven for LGBTQ+ travellers.

The facilities at W Verbier are extensive

The spa is, in a word, extensive, offering luxurious treatment rooms, top-tier therapists, and a menu that spans everything from deep tissue massages to Swiss-inspired detox treatments – all the treatments you can dream of while tackling a challenging black slope are here. There’s also three different saunas, ample steam rooms, jacuzzis and two pools, including a connecting outdoor pool, which is a must. Sitting in there, feeling the cold on our face and the warmth on our body, steam rising up into the mountains, snow lightly melting on the surface; it’s nothing short of magical.

There is enough to do at W Verbier even if you don’t ski or snowboard, but for those who do, there’s direct access to over 400 km of prime slopes, catering to all skill levels and including off piste routes. For those who want something between chill and adventure, try a scenic snowshoeing trail (they happen to meander past wonderful restaurants and bars, it’s a holiday remember).

W Verbier is essentially the beautiful epicenter of a magical and glamorous destination. Sure, you can visit and ski, board, shop, party, eat, and relax without even stepping inside the hotel – but if you want to make the most of the destination, stay in beautifully designed cabins which blend into the environment, have slopes and spas both at your doorstep, and generally feel like some sort of supervillain living it up mountain side, there’s nowhere better to call base.

Best For:
LGBTQ+ alpine adventurers, frosted spa lovers, and those who enjoy luxury as much as they do adrenaline

Rooms start from £661 per night. Click here for more information.

What to visit and where to go out if you’re queer and heading to the Catalan capital.

WITH THANKS TO THE HOUSE OF ERIKALUST AND THE BARCELONA EDITION

Sandwiched between a beach and the peak of Tibidabo, a hill which, for some reason, boasts both a monastery and a theme park, Barcelona is a tourism beacon.

It’s likely you already know the city’s major attractions: the colourful, cartoonish architecture of Gaudí, clamorous market stalls snaking down La Rambla, and the characterful buildings in the Gothic Quarter. There’s also the annual Primavera Sound festival, which is to liberal arts students what Aiya Napa is to school-leavers.

If you are going to Barca, we beg you to switch up your itinerary. Ditch the TikTok recs and old school travel guides and listen to us. Not only will we look after you, we’ll make sure you have a gay (or LGBTQIA+) old time.

LGBTQIA+ Barcelona:

Anyone who values GAY TIMES travel tips is likely of the queer and/or trans persuasion. (Any allies reading this, have a gold star). If you’re heading to Barcelona, there will be plenty of options to keep you entertained.

Beyond the typical petty crime you can experience in any major city (hold on tight to your wallet) it’s a pretty safe spot for queer folks and you’ll see lots of couples holding hands on the streets. Have a scan of any street and you can easily spot queer-friendly venues: they often sport Pride and trans flags in their windows.

There’s also plenty of gay-centric bars, clubs and sex shops in the city’s Eixample (affectionately known as Gaixample) area – which mixes the fabulously seedy energy of London’s Soho with just a touch of Berlin bohemia.

Beyond the annual Pride parade in July, the city boasts a Matinée Easter Gay Weekend in April and a Circuit Festival (which we can only presume is for circuit gays) in August. There’s also an annual Barcelona Queer Film Festival, next taking place in its full format in November 2025, which also organises smaller events and screenings throughout the year.

Fancy heading out on a day trip? Seaside town Sitges is a short train ride away and is brimming with gay beaches. There’s also Girona, a picture-perfect town with stunning architecture, quaint shops and, if you happen to stay the night, a very cute lesbian-owned B&B.

Where to eat:

Barcelona’s food scene is so much more than paella (which, by the way, actually originates from Valencia).

Catalan cuisine is fresh, rustic and notably different from the tapas and burgers plied by overpriced tourist traps. For a more authentic Catalan food experience, in a space that feels modern and queer-friendly, we recommend 7 Portes.

If you’re looking for a specifically queer spot, try Poble Sec’s La Raposa, a feminist bookshop and vegan cafe co-op. Proudly intersectional, trans-inclusive and LGBTQIA+ friendly, it’s a great spot for queer and FLINTA folks to plot the revolution over gluten-free baked goods.

In the queer neighbourhood Eixample, you can head to Funky Eatery (which adjoins Funky Deli). By day, it’s an airy cafe great for brunch or a light lunch. By night, it serves orange wine by candlelight, serving up eclectic small plates which combine a modern European sensibility with Turkish inspiration.

There’s also Soma, which gives a speakeasy feel thanks to its olive green interior, dark wood furnishings and well-stocked bar. The foodie fabulations include delicate cheese buñuelos, a beautifully presented mini caponata stacked with bread crips, and fresh fish and meat options.

If you’re hankering for well-made classics, head to Bar Cañete, which serves elite tapas and fresh fish from Catalan markets. Be warned, however, booking is essential. You can queue up right before service begins for a coveted countertop space but the line is long and waiting cap-in-hand may be too much to stomach for some.

Where to go out:

If you’re on holiday, you’ll want to go to the club.

Our number one rec? Dykey, FLINTA party MARICAS. Founded in 2018 by Eloisa Blitzer, Gina Gausch and ISAbella, the party has booked the likes of D.Tiffany, JASSS, Slim Soledad and Roza Terenzi and continues to push the scene forward. This sexy, silly collective believes that the dancefloor is a healing space, with a suitably robust safer space policy to support their aim.

If you’re less of a club rat and more into scrappy, experimental queer performance, head to Candy Darling. Named after Warhol’s trans muse, the bar hosts cabaret, drag and even a regular queer flamenco night. There’s also El Raval’s Madame Jasmine, a self-described “GENDERFUCK HOUSE” (where do we sign up?).

Looking for something different? Try The House of ERIKALUST: a first of its kind, immersive erotic experience from the world’s most famous feminist porn director. Utilising the director’s expansive back catalogue, visitors can enjoy a variety of large-scale erotic screenings and even a VR experience taking you into a virtual porn mansion.

Finally, the city’s reputable het clubbing haunts include Razzmatazz and Club Nitsa, spots similar to London’s Fabric which attract the major names in techno, house, trance and Latincore.

What to visit:

There’s a lot to do and see in Barca, so please don’t resort to heading to the theme park or hopping on a cable car.

Art mavens can check out the side-by-side cultural institutions Museu d’Art Contemporani de Barcelona (MACBA) and Centro de Cultura Contemporánea de Barcelona (CCCB), both of which boast diverse programming and nuanced curation.

In terms of LGBTQIA+ specific happenings, there’s plenty to keep you entertained. You can head to Odd Kiosk, a queer-owned magazine spot that brings together the best in print culture – from queer zines, to art prints, to esoteric European fashion mags.

If you fancy getting ~active~ and plunging into the local queer scene, you can head to a meeting of Queer Pong Club – a queer (but lesbian leaning) ping-pong meetup which takes place in Poble Sec the first Monday of most months.

Where to stay:

There are plenty of cute hotels in Barca, but none as luxe as The Barcelona EDITION. Well-situated in the Poble Nou area – right next to the massive Mercat de Santa Caterina food hall – the hotel is just a short taxi ride from the queer haunts of Eixample.

Part of the wider The EDITION group – who’ve been known to help GAY TIMES celebrate Pride in style – the atmosphere is open and queer-friendly.

Inside, the decor is a chic, modern minimalism and the public areas are flooded with a bespoke Le Labo fragrance that smells of opulence. Rooms boast fluffy duvets, powdery white bedding and the kind of power shower that can cure any hangover.

There’s lots of amenities, too. For dinner, the ground floor restaurant Veraz offers fresh, seasonally inspired dishes (including good vegetarian options). If you’re more partial to a liquid dinner, try the first floor cocktail bar Punch Room – while it has its own menu of mixological delights, the bartenders can also whip up the classics, including an ice cold Cosmopolitan.

In the summers, you can re-enact SATC S6 E3 (you know, the one with Annabelle Bronstein…) thanks to the hotel’s in-demand rooftop pool, the best place in the city to cool down from the heat.

Responsible tourism

Let’s address the obvious: Barcelona has an overtourism problem. The Catalan capital is home to just 1.5 million inhabitants but receives 32 million visitors a year.

The consequences of this situation are far-reaching: rabid gentrification, near-constant construction, a major housing crisis, and unbearable overcrowding during the summer months. In response, a grassroots anti-tourism movement – which is responsible, somewhat comically, for targeting visitors with water pistols – has emerged.

All that doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t visit Barcelona. However, you’ll probably have a much more enjoyable time – and feel better about yourself, too – if you visit the city away from the peak season.

Avoid big, international shopping and food chains and instead opt for local, small businesses (like our recs above). Whatever you do, do not stay in an AirBnB – holiday lets have a hugely disruptive impact on local residents, driving up rents and swallowing up available housing.

While you’re at it, try learning some words in Catalan rather than relying on English – the effort will go a long way.

Here’s why the all-inclusive Hyde Bodrum needs to be on your travel radar.

WORDS BY GAY TIMES

All-inclusive has gone luxury. Hotel giants Ennismore and Accor jump on the growing trend of upmarket all-in stays – we travel to Bodrum to try out their new “boho-chic” brand – Hyde.

Bodrum is a destination that has experienced rapid growth in recent years. From Hollywood celebrities to European holidaymakers, it seems everyone is descending on the Aegean Sea for guaranteed sun and relaxation.

It’s not too surprising then that Accor has chosen the Turkish resort as its first all-inclusive destination for Hyde Hotels.

Whatever your preconceived notions of All-Inclusive are – it’s time to throw them out the window. This is all-inclusive, done right.

Arrival

One of the best features of Hyde Bodrum is its proximity to Milas-Bodrum International Airport. With resorts in the area sometimes an hour away, the quick 25-minute drive after a short or long-haul flight feels remarkably easy. Better yet, the airport is still small enough that immigration and baggage reclaim resemble more a small holiday port than an international hub.

Passing the various resorts on the coastal road, we quickly arrive at the new Hyde Bodrum gates, which opened in May 2024 to guests for the first time.

Check-in is a breeze and takes place in the lounge area, with ‘Sun and Moon’, a coffee and patisserie shop adjacent. Serra, a guest relations manager, looked after us and we were off to our room within a few minutes.

The hotel offers golf carts, mostly to escape the extreme sun in the Turkish Riviera. This resort is small, and delightfully so. Four separate accommodation buildings surround the expansive pools and decks.

Rooms

We’re staying in a Platinum One-Bedroom Suite, but all accommodations are spacious, well-appointed, and feature floor-to-ceiling windows.

The vibe, in their own words, is “boho-chic” – what does that mean? We’re not really sure either, but expect wooden floors and furniture, muted tones and blues that reflect the nearby Aegean Sea.

The beds are super comfortable, and the rooms are well sound-proofed. The only watch-out is the bathrooms, which, while nice, feature that same internal dividing you’d more associate with your nearby swimming pool or leisure centre than a luxury hotel.

Pools and Decks

The big selling point of this property is the vast swimming pools that connect the buildings. Some rooms even feature private swim-up pools at ground level. If you opt for a regular room, fear not, nobody is waking at the crack of dawn to put towels on sun-beds here.

There are so many sun-beds and cabanas, all with personal shade, that you are never going to need to fight with your fellow guests for space. We often found enough that you could easily take a couple to yourself for extra room.

Dining and Bars

Now – here’s the dealmaker – all-inclusive comes with a fairly muddy reputation of low-quality food, plate-filling diners and excess for the sake of excess. We were relieved to see none of those features at Hyde Bodrum.

The hotel boasts five different dining options, all of which have unique features and benefits. Here’s the breakdown;

Palms

Let’s start with – to our delight – the only buffet on-site. Greater Palms is probably the closest you’ll get to what you imagine All-Inclusive to be – with a few twists.

The buffet restaurant is huge, and tables are in plentiful supply. This is the only place you can have breakfast and is also open for lunch and dinner.

The unique approach Hyde has taken, along with its focus on freshly prepared food, is that options are often made to order. Although you’ll be circulating a large area with numerous options, there are chefs at every station preparing your food to order, endorsing the restaurant’s promise of fresh food – and the food really is.

This means food tastes great and you can customise to your heart’s content. Traditional Turkish options are always available, along with Mediterranean-style cuisine.

Hyde Beach

Our favourite spot in the resort has to be Hyde Beach. Perched on the side of the rocky beachfront with stunning views of the Aegean Sea. This is your first taste of how different Hyde approaches its all-inclusive offering – entirely a-la-carte.

The menus are limited, but we love that. Having a huge array of options often serves to decrease the quality. Hyde Beach has a good range of options within its limited menu, and the staff is plentiful and attentive. We can highly recommend the poke bowl.

La Rebelle

We were so impressed by La Rebelle. The menu is limited and this adds to it feeling more refined and sets it apart as everything is a la carte. A culinary delight indeed.

Check Out

A special mention has to go out to the Guest Relations Team, who provided a late check out due to our late flight departure from Bodrum and dealt with this with flexibility and positivity. A common theme during our stay.

Bookings are now open for Hyde Bodrum with limited time starting promotional rates only to be found at www.hydehotels.com/bodrum.

Hyde Bodrum is part of the ALL Inclusive Collection, the popular digital platform that allows guests to discover a highly curated selection of all-inclusive resorts in some of the world’s most exciting destinations.

ALL Inclusive Collection brings together over 35 breathtaking resorts, challenging the historical perception of all-inclusive holidays by creating memorable luxury experiences with exceptional and varied culinary offers and high-quality entertainment.
