There’s never been a better time to visit Reykjavik as it’s popularity continues to soar with travellers across the world.

Words by Lewis Corner

Reykjavik’s popularity as a must-visit destination has swelled over the past decade – and immediately during the car ride from the airport to Iceland’s capital city, it’s clear to see why. Mystical mountaintops form a scenic backdrop fitting for a fantastical fairytale, while roads cut through moss-flecked lava fields and traffic whizzes past plumes of hot steam erupting from the natural geysers in the distance. You instantly feel like you’ve escaped reality, surrounded by nature in its unspoilt magnificence.

It comes as little surprise then that Ian Schrager – the mastermind behind EDITION Hotels – was keen to add it to the property’s list of locations. Launching at the end of 2021, The Reykjavik EDITION is perfectly situated in the downtown of Iceland’s premier city. Placed on the harbour front, its ebony façade of shou sugi ban timber fits beautifully with the scenic views surrounding it. These considered design details, in true EDITION fashion, carry through the rest of the hotel.

As you step into the lobby you are instantly struck by the Icelandic lava stone sculptural totem commissioned especially for the hotel. Surrounded by seating and plush faux fur textiles, the essence of Iceland’s Nordic and Celtic heritage is blended with natural materials to bring the beauty of the country’s unique wonders inside. This is brought to life further with a subtle but stunning video mapped Northern Lights projected onto the wall – hues of green and purple waves dancing wistfully to reflect Iceland’s glorious night sky.

The Reykjavik EDITION is the capital’s first 5-star hotel, comprising 253 guestrooms and suites, a rooftop bar, restaurants and a spa. The guestrooms are warm and welcoming, with a muted palette of ash wood and pale grey oak bringing a lightness to the surroundings. Floor to ceiling windows offer spectacular views, while Italian custom-made furniture brings interior flair for the modern luxury feel the EDITION is famous for. To give the space an Icelandic twist, there’s cosy wool throws on the bed from local company Ístex, ceramics by artist Guðbjörg Káradóttir, and artwork by famous Icelandic artists Pall Stefansson and Ragnar Axelsson – celebrating local artisans and showcasing the country’s creativity.

On the ground floor is the hotel’s signature restaurant Tides which is filled with light beaming through the floor to ceiling windows. The menu features both local dishes and Icelandic twists on the classics. For lunch, the crispy chicken burger is succulent with its curry remoulade infusion, while the Atlantic Lobster Roll is fresh with local shellfish wrapped in a soft and warm brioche bun and embellished with sweet mango salsa. The evening menu, meanwhile, offers a truly special line-up of dishes. North Icelandic Lamb Fillet is tender, with caramelised celeriac pureé giving it a tangy hit. The Lobster Ravioli was fresh and zesty, melting in the mouth with every bite, while the Braised Icelandic Lamb Gnocchi with roasted tomatoes and Feykir cheese was rich with flavours that will have you ordering a second portion. As far as side dishes go, the Sautéed Mushrooms feel straightforward when written down on a menu, but blended with garlic and pangrattato it was easily a firm favourite at the table with its moreish seasoning enhancing the main dishes further.

The relaxed bar in the lobby area is perfect for that pre-dinner cocktail, with soft furnishings offering space and time to relax. Just next to it is Tölt – named after the unique fourth gait Icelandic horses are best known for – a snug bar hidden away just off the side of the lobby, with little nooks to have a quiet drink or a nightcap after a long day of exploring. The space is adorned with rich wood panelling and colourful furnishings, with a menu of bespoke cocktails featuring local Icelandic spirits.

Up on the seventh floor is The Reykjavik EDITION’s stunning rooftop bar and terrace that offers panoramic views of the mountains, the North Atlantic Ocean and the city rooftops. In the summer you can catch the burnt orange sunsets while sipping on a drink, but you’ll be waiting until 10.30pm for that perfect dusky skyline. In the depths of winter, the rooftop is under a canopy of the Northern Lights – one of the most comfortable and breathtaking views of the aurora borealis.

It wouldn’t be a trip to Iceland without some form of spa experience, and The Reykjavik EDITION’s facilities do not disappoint. There are three treatment rooms for massages and facial scrubs which can be booked beforehand, while a hammam, steam room, sauna, and a plunge pool offering hydrotherapy allows for a moment of relaxation and rejuvenation. The central lounge with a spa bar serves a fresh healthy menu of post-workout Viking shakes if you’ve been sweating it off in the adjoining gym. For those who are looking for a pamper day, there’s champagne and Icelandic cocktails to fit the occasion.

The hotel is nestled in the heart of Reykjavik’s downtown by Old Harbor port, and is a prime location to easily explore the capital city and beyond. Guests are just a short walk away from Laugavegur Street, where you will find the city’s vibrant shopping district. Rainbow Street is just a 9-minute walk away, which leads up to one of Reykjavik’s iconic landmarks, Hallgrimskirkja, a 20th Century church of architectural brilliance. The city also boasts a healthy and diverse art scene, with Reykjavik Art Museum Hafnarhús being just a 5-minute walk from The Reykjavik EDITION. A single ticket gives you access to three different galleries, with Hafnarhús offering contemporary multi-media exhibitions, Reykjavík Art Museum Kjarvalsstaðir (30-minute walk) showcasing classic and local artists, and Reykjavík Art Museum Ásmundarsafn (11-minute cab journey) being based in the former studio of Icelandic sculptor Ásmundur Sveinsson.

Reykjavik’s popular and tranquil Sky Lagoon is a 12-minute cab journey away, where guests can enjoy hours in the warm spring water with its infinity-pool style view over the ocean, while enjoying drinks from the lagoon bar. For those who want to explore beyond the city, Pink Iceland arranges full-day tours to explore the natural wonders. Their Golden Circle tour will take you to gorges being torn apart by moving tectonic plates at Thingvellir National park; standing next to the magnificent Gullfoss waterfall; and catching the geyser Strokkur erupt at the world-famous Geysir geothermal area. With a pick-up point very close to The Reykjavik EDITION it’s the easiest way to explore Iceland’s majestic nature.

Get ready to raise your glasses because GT is turning 40, and we’re celebrating in style! To mark this magnificent milestone, we’re shaking things up with four delicious cocktails, each paying a nod to the remarkable culture of our iconic history. And what better partners to join us in the festivities than the legendary Cointreau orange liqueur and queer drinks guru and TV personality Aidy Smith.

This year has been all about the big 4-0, with events like the GT40 exhibition showcasing our rich history, and the GT40 campaign bringing together our incredible community. Now, as we gear up for the main event, we’re excited to unveil something truly special—four bespoke cocktails that have been inspired, concepted and created especially for our 40th birthday.

From soothing peach and pineapple spritz to spicy mango and velvety passion fruit treats, drinks expert Aidy Smith has curated and developed a series of thirst-quenching recipes that we can’t wait to share.

Here’s a sneak peek at the cocktails you can look forward to:

Divine Peach

A Peach Margarita with Cointreau Orange Liqueur that blends juicy peach and creamy vanilla orange with a refreshing citrus tang for a uniquely satisfying twist on a classic cocktail.

Ingredients:

25ml Cointreau Orange Liqueur
50ml Reposado Tequila
20ml Freshly Squeezed Lime Juice
10ml Peach Syrup
2 Dashes Of Chocolate Bitters (optional)
Garnish with Fresh Peach Slice on Side of Glass

Recipe: Combine all ingredients in a shaker with ice, shake until chilled, and strain into a glass. Garnish with a fresh peach slice.

Some Like it Hot

A Spicy Mango Jalapeño Margarita with Cointreau Orange Liqueur that combines sweet mango and vanilla orange with a zesty lime and a bold jalapeño kick, finished with a salted chili rim for an adventurous flavor experience.

Ingredients:

20ml Cointreau Orange Liqueur
40ml Reposado Tequila
20ml Freshly Squeezed Lime Juice
10ml Mango Syrup
1-3 Slices of Green Jalapeño with Seeds (From Mild to HOT)
Garnish with a Slice of Green Jalapeño (Remove Seeds)

Recipe: Place all of the ingredients into a cocktail shaker and muddle the green chilli into the liquid to intertwine the spiciness. Shake with ice until chilled and double strain into a rocks glass filled with ice, being careful not to get any seeds into the glass. Garnish with either a single slice of green jalapeño (no seeds) or multiple smaller slices (no seeds).

Priscilla

A Pineapple & Rum Highball with Mount Gay Rum offering a crisp, tropical flavor of fresh pineapple and toffee, light on sweetness yet full of refreshing, thirst-quenching flavours.

Ingredients:

25ml Mount Gay Eclipse Rum
100ml Franklin & Sons Pineapple & Almond Soda
4 Dashes of Bobs Summer Bitters
Garnish with a Fresh Slice of Pineapple on the Side of the Glass & Pineapple Leaf
Garnish with Edible Gold Leaf (optional)

Recipe: Slice your pineapple leaf inside a highball glass and fill to the top with ice. Pour in the rum and top up with soda. Give a gentle stir with a bar spoon and garnish with the fresh pineapple slice and gold leaf. Use a paper straw to drink.

Tootsie

A Raspberry Passion Fruit Martini with Passoã Passion Fruit Liqueur that fuses smooth raspberry and lively passionfruit with a rich vanilla undertone, creating a cocktail that’s both elegant and irresistibly indulgent.

Ingredients:

30ml Passoa Passion Fruit Liqueur
40ml Vanilla Vodka
15ml Freshly Squeezed Lemon Juice
5ml Vanilla Syrup
6 Fresh Raspberries
Half a Passion Fruit
Garnish with 2-3 Raspberries on a Metal Cocktail Sword

Recipe: Add all ingredients into a cocktail shaker and shake with ice until chilled. Double strain into a coupe glass. Garnish with 2-3 fresh raspberries on a metal cocktail sword.

As Cointreau’s Senior Brand Manager, Ines Leitao Henriques puts it “Cointreau is delighted to have been invited by GAY TIMES to celebrate their milestone birthday together!  For over 100 years Cointreau Orange Liqueur has been embracing inclusivity and freedom of self-expression, inspiring and enabling creativity in cocktail making. Making cocktails doesn’t need to be scary or daunting, and these creations showcase just that. I can’t wait for everyone to shake and sip with as much joy as I’ve had working on this incredible collaboration”.

To make this celebration even more special, we’re releasing four exclusive videos on our social channels, each featuring a step-by-step guide to making these cocktails at home.

What makes a music icon? Some would say it’s having a sound like no-one else out there. Others would point to timeless style and piercing through pop culture with flair and intent. Or maybe it’s the ability to bring people together through the power of music. And if you manage to encompass all of these qualities, chances are you’ve got an audience for life.

That’s why the long-anticipated return of the Beats Pill has everyone excited. You knew you’d made it if the Beats Pill made a cameo in your music video back in the 2010s, popping up alongside everyone from Miley Cyrus to Nicki Minaj – as well as our personal favourite, its literal gag-worthy turn in Britney Spears’s Work Bitch. The Beats Pill brand is still powerful, and for its new era it’s got a raft of slick upgrades that live up to its reputation.

Reengineered and redesigned, its glow-up still centres on that pill-shaped casing it is famous for, but this time around with a soft silicone finish in three colours including Matte Black, Statement Red and Champagne Gold. But it’s inside the Beats Pill where a good majority of the innovation plays out. The sound quality is vastly improved for blasting out your favourite classics both inside and outside the home. The bass is deeper and fuller, there are crisper highs and richer mid-tones. Extra stability within the speaker helps reduce any distortion, delivering an enhanced acoustic experience.

It’s the little details that make the biggest impact – particularly the 20-degree upward tilt that helps project sound further and minimise any reflected sound. There’s a removable carry lanyard for when you’re on the go, and with an IP67 rating for dust and water resistance it has increased durability for the outdoors. Not only does the powerful sound make it perfect for parties and gatherings when played on its own, but the ability to pair it in Amplify Mode with another Beats Pill takes the audio experience to club-levels of oomph. If you’d rather left/right output, there’s Stereo Mode too.

Improved battery life takes it to 24 hours playback on a single full charge; there’s compatibility and quick pairing with iOS and Android devices; it now comes with a USB-C port; it has industry-leading Class 1 Bluetooth connectivity; and you can use it as a speakerphone to easily take calls, with the Beats Pill able to suppress unwanted noise around the speaker and target your voice more clearly. With undeniably good sound, sleek design, the ability to bring people together and its status as a pop culture phenomenon, the Beats Pill remains as popular as the songs and superstars it plays. Music icons don’t always need to be singers, they can be speakers too.

Beats Pill, available from beatsbydre.com/uk/ priced at £149.99

For 50 years ABBA has built an untouchable legacy that has united people in many untold ways – but ABBA Voyage is the physical vessel where that connection is crystalized, night after night.

When ABBA Voyage launched in the summer of 2022 it was hailed as a pop concert experience like nothing before it. A specially-designed ABBA Arena nestled in the heart of East London gave birth to a legendary reunion that many believed would never be possible. Digital avatars of Frida, Agnetha, Benny and Björn – aptly nicknamed ABBAtars – deliver a setlist of hits that have adorned the halls of the mighty pop pantheon for decades. The production is a technical marvel – transporting audiences from the edges of the solar system to mystical Scandi realms – celebrating and creating music history in equal measure. From the stage design right through to the visual and sound experience, it stands as an unparalleled jewel of technological innovation. But while the show is powered by majestical machinery, it’s the feeling of human connection, pop communion and unexpected friendships that serve as some of the most lasting memories for people who attend.

For decades, ABBA has united people through their music, their enduring style and their capacity to fill dance floors from Stockholm to Sydney. But it’s ABBA Voyage that has brought millions of these fans physically together in one place to indulge in the brilliant world they have created. That’s especially true of the LGBTQ+ community who have been committed fans of the band, as much as the band have been staunch allies. “We found out quite early that ‘Dancing Queen’ had become an anthem and we were very proud that we’ve been chosen by the community,” ABBA’s Björn Ulvaeus told GAY TIMES back in 2019. “As a Swede, long before most others, we had a much more open society and open attitudes. This is, in a way, a liberating anthem and it makes me proud. It’s a wonderful thing, it really is.”

The idea of finding one’s tribe is something many people from different walks of life can relate to. It’s something that ABBA’s legacy has, and continues to facilitate in many different guises. It’s why GAY TIMES has partnered with ABBA Voyage to explore how bringing people together through joy and unity has positively impacted so many already at the ABBA Arena. The campaign – Unexpected Friendships – focuses on how ABBA Voyage connects people through their love of song, dance and fashion, all through the lens of ABBA’s golden heritage and their boundary-pushing concert extravaganza. We have Mimi embodying The Singer, Finn Love bringing the energy as The Dancer, and Black Peppa serving looks as The Fashionista, all honouring ABBA’s unequivocal impact on pop culture.

ABBA’s songs have long served as a connecting force in pop – whether it’s people from diverse backgrounds, intergenerational audiences or music lovers of different genres. Their magnetic anthems bind people together, allowing them to bask in the beauty of unity. For the LGBTQ+ community, they have long adopted ABBA’s music as canon in the queer experience. “ABBA made amazing pop songs, sung by amazing female singers, which is something queer people have always responded to,” says music journalist Nick Levine. “We’ve always loved a strong female voice singing an absolute banger. No-one would’ve been calling Agnetha and Frida ‘mother’ in 1974, but that’s absolutely what they were.”

With a setlist boasting timeless classics such as ‘SOS’, ‘Voulez-vous’ and ‘Does Your Mother Know’, ABBA Voyage is brimming with songs that have been embedded in human consciousness for years – so much so that the singer inside you jumps out. “In the case of ‘Gimme Gimme Gimme’, it feels very queer-coded,” Levine remarks. “How could ‘Gimme Gimme Gimme’ not have gone on to become a gay anthem? It’s preposterous to think that it wouldn’t have been.”

No-one would’ve been calling Agnetha and Frida ‘mother’ in 1974, but that’s absolutely what they were.

The magic of ABBA’s songs – brought to life in full glory at ABBA Voyage, with ABBAtars front and centre and a live band raising the roof further – is the universality it never fails to offer. Meanings, memories and emotions pour out in different ways, but always connecting audiences through song. ABBA Voyage creates a safe space where like-minded people can embrace the fantastical. That enduring kinship with the LGBTQ+ community likely dates back to a time where ABBA were considered outsiders themselves at the start of their career. It’s hard to even imagine a time where that was true for the band, but as Levine recalls they were “looked down upon by the straight white male rock gatekeepers”. The soul of their songwriting was borne from this position which is why it continues to resonate with those looking for their community. “The queer community has always recognised ABBA’s brilliance and loved them when they were kind of underdogs,” Levine adds.

Naturally this translates to the energy that ABBA’s biggest floor-filling hits demands. Ask anyone who’s been to ABBA Voyage and they’ll tell you that the dancefloor is the place to be. It’s an environment where friendships are celebrated and friendships are formed. There’s few places where a Gen Z music lover will cross paths with an older long-time ABBA fan and form bonds through their love of letting loose to some of pop’s most infamous melodies. It goes without saying that ABBA Voyage is an international crowd, with fans traveling from all over. “There was something very global about ABBA’s disco-pop sound,” says Levine on why he thinks ABBA’s back catalogue continues to fill dancefloors today. “The four of them together created something transcendent. They don’t sound like anyone else’s disco songs. ABBA were able to step into a genre in a totally respectful way, but one where it didn’t feel like they were mimicking.”

This sense of community leaves a lasting impression on fans who attend the show. The arena is primed to encourage new encounters and unexpected friendships. “Each time I have attended ABBA Voyage, I have been struck by the profound sense of unity among the crowd,” says Nicco, an ABBA fan who has visited the multi-coloured arena on numerous occasions. “The audience is a diverse and inclusive blend, featuring people of all ages and backgrounds. I consistently find myself bonding with those around me, sharing past experiences and reveling in the joy of the moment.”

The ultimate party atmosphere gives little reason to not make a fashion statement. ABBA fans who have flocked to the ABBA Arena often pay homage to the elegant stylings of the band, whose sartorial flair still influences fashion today. “ABBA were known to dress outside the box even for the 70s and 80s,” says fashion director and stylist, Umar Sarwar. “They mixed maximalism with strong Scandi silhouettes to create unique bespoke moments on and off stage.” ABBA Voyage is a portal to embrace your inner fashionista, where striking looks create immediate bonds with other fashion-forward audience members and offers an arena built for freedom of expression. There’s plenty to be inspired by too, with Frida and Agnetha’s costumes in ABBA Voyage evoking the classic and contemporary. “Seeing the bell bottom pants, embroidered and sequined blazers, the jumpsuits, the lycra, all with a chic modern twist, makes you feel you’re in the thick of a 70s disco party,” adds Sarwar, who attended the show last year. “Had I known the visceral experience I was about to embark on, I would have ditched the denim and opted for the velvet suede!”

Had I known the visceral experience I was about to embark on, I would have ditched the denim and opted for the velvet suede!

For 50 years ABBA has built an untouchable legacy that has united people in many untold ways. ABBA Voyage is the physical vessel where that connection is crystalized, night after night, month after month. Their ethos of bringing people together to escape the everyday, embrace the musical fantasy and party with each other is unmatched. Unexpected friendships are boundless and their commitment to creating a world of kindness, compassion and connection goes beyond the ABBA Arena. If you pick up one of the ABBA Pride t-shirts in the gift shop or online, 50% of the profits go to local East London charity elop, an organisation working hard to support the mental health, wellbeing, empowerment and equality of LGBTQ+ communities. With a gilded career and a golden discography of hits, ABBA Voyage is the ultimate celebration of a band who continues to joyfully bring audiences together, no matter who they are.

Dancefloor tickets for ABBA Voyage are on sale now. Keep an eye on GAY TIMES for how you can get involved with the greatest pop show on Earth in the coming weeks.

Cast: Nabhaan Rizwan, Amir El-Masry, Rory Fleck Byrne

Aden is a British-Asian twenty-something trying to create a name for himself as a successful actor in this sharp and witty debut feature from writer-director Naqqash Khalid. Shot in Manchester, the film is candid in spotlighting the inequity and prejudice within the entertainment industry, as well as modern British life at large.

Aden’s flatmate Bo is a stressed junior doctor driven to hallucinations, but it’s when confident newcomer Conrad moves in that sets the actor’s path on a new course. With a critically-lauded performance from Nabhaan Rizwan as Aden, the barriers faced by the character forces him to treat “success” as a role he needs to embody in everyday life to overcome the hypocrisy and tokenism at play. It results in an ambitious indie title that is funny, compelling and subverts convention.

Nabhaan Rizwan stars as Aden in In Camera (2023)

There’s a number of free access activities for festival attendees too, including the MUBI Screen where you can immerse yourself in a series of short and feature length films all weekend from the likes of Sofia Coppola, Yorgos Lanthimos, and one of the first screenings of Skepta’s directorial debut short film Tribal Mark. ;

There’s an opening night party on Friday from Manchester’s queer-run music collective High Hoops; Saturday music performances from artists including Chandé, Hannah O’Gorman, Bollibubbles and Tarzsa; and a special MUBI Poster Installation.

Other free-to-attend highlights include a line-up of talks including Life in the Creative Industries, a Director Roundtable on Casting, and a Behind the Scenes with Film Industry Professionals; and an Art Table with drop-in workshops where you can create some fun pieces of art inspired by film.

The festival will also have food and drink on offer from a number of partners, including Most Wanted Wines,  fresh pasta, tacos, Detroit-style pizzas, breakfast burritos and small plates on offer.

With surprises planned for across the weekend, there will be plenty more activities and chances to celebrate in store.

A new mental health platform created by and for queer East & Southeast Asian people has launched in the UK.

RED FLAGGED is a community organisation founded by Ed Lee and Alex Han to create an uplifting and supporting environment for queer ESEA people; an often overlooked and underserved group of people in London and beyond.

The community group’s aim is to provide free therapy, drive awareness, hold community events and create social content for queer ESEA people, while fostering an uplifting and supporting environment for them.

This has led to RED FLAGGED launching AA – Asians Anonymous – a mental health platform that offers free group in-person therapy with queer ESEA therapists, aimed at queer ESEA people, monthly for the next 12 months.

Its founders felt the need for the service to overcome cultural stigma around seeking therapy, as well as grave challenges finding therapists who understand both the ESEA and queer experience.

The sessions will be led by a different ESEA therapist each quarter, allowing them to offer a varied spectrum of the lived experiences across the ESEA community.

They will be hosted at Queer Britain in King’s Cross, London and facilitated by award-winning mental health app VODA.

“This platform was created based on personal experiences as queer and Asian,” said founder Ed Lee. “My journey has been challenging, facing unique obstacles rooted in our cultures.

“The launch was met with an overwhelming response from the community, with them finally feeling seen. If our work at RED FLAGGED can help a young ESEA queer person lead a happier life, then we have accomplished our goal.”

Fellow founder Alex Han added: “As an ESEA diaspora, the journey can be both powerful and enriching. We are exposed to different cultures, ways of thinking, and an array of emotions.

“At the same time, these same intersections, unique points of view, and intense highs and lows can be overwhelming and impact one’s self esteem and confidence.

“At RED FLAGGED, we believe that ‘a healthy you is a healthy community’, and our new platform, AA (Asian Anonymous), can help ESEA queers better navigate their unique challenges and become a healthier and better you.”

Sign-up for AA is free and available now with the first in-person group therapy session taking place on 12 July.

The sessions will then continue for the next year on every second Friday of the month.

You can follow RED FLAGGED on Instagram here and visit their website here.

The London-based DJ has reworked the classic queer anthem Smalltown Boy for a new generation of club kids.

There was some pretty gay stuff happening in the month of May 1984. Not only was GAY TIMES Magazine first established, but it also saw the release of one of the most iconic gay anthems of all time.

You’ll be hard-pressed to find someone who isn’t immediately hypnotised by the pulsing electro-pop heartbeat of Bronski Beat’s ‘Smalltown Boy’. That riff is as exciting today as it was back then; a timeless callout to queer people everywhere.

To celebrate the 40th anniversary of ‘Smalltown Boy’, British DJ ABSOLUTE. has reworked the classic into a surging club anthem while retaining the magic of the original. “I wanted to keep the essence of what made it so special in the first place but add some modern day energy and euphoria,” he tells GAY TIMES.

After sprinkling his golden remix dust over gay anthems by the likes of Kylie Minogue and George Michael in recent years, the London-based DJ was the perfect pick for the honour.

So when it came to finding the perfect soundtrack for 40 Years of GAY TIMES: The Exhibition, it felt like the dream match. Considering Bronski Beat appeared on the cover of GAY TIMES Magazine in November 1984 and ABSOLUTE. is a recent digital cover star and friend of the brand, there’s shared history all round.

We caught up with ABSOLUTE. to discuss his remix of ‘Smalltown Boy’, how music by LGBTQIA+ acts has evolved since 1984 and his own memories of GAY TIMES Magazine.

What inspired you to remix such an iconic track? How did you approach it?

It’s pretty nerve-racking reworking such an iconic tune. It was an emotional moment when I first listened to the parts and heard Jimmy’s vocal playing on its own, especially growing up queer in a small town. There’s so many standout parts to the original, I felt a lot of pressure to do it justice. I wanted to keep the essence of what made it so special in the first place but add some modern day energy and euphoria. I aimed to create something I could end my set with in the main room at Drumsheds for False Idols or 10am on a Sunday in Panorama bar.

How has the reception been for your remix so far? Have you received any feedback from fans or the original band members?

It’s had the most incredible response. It really feels such an honour to add a small part to the track’s long legacy and have so much positive feedback. I think the best part was having such a lovely message back from [Bronski Beat frontman] Jimmy [Somerville] about it.

How do you feel the LGBTQ+ music scene has evolved since Bronski Beat first released their music in 1984?

It feels like there’s a space for everyone musically now and there’s more representation. There’s so many scenes that if you’re in London, you can find a queer space that’s playing music you love and that feels really liberating. It’s where I found so many of my chosen family.

If you could remix any other classic LGBTQ+ anthem, which one would it be and why?

I feel I’ve had a pretty good run remixing Kylie and George Michael [laughs], but I would love to remix something from Charli XCX‘s new album. I created a private edit of Club Classics for my sets recently, which is how the Kylie remix first came about, so you never know!

Do you remember your first time interacting with GAY TIMES?

I remember first buying GAY TIMES Magazine before I came out and being terrified in case someone saw me [laughs] and then reading it and feeling like I wasn’t alone – that there’s other people out there like me. I don’t think you can underestimate the power of that when you’re growing up.

What did you think of 40 Years of GAY TIMES: The Exhibition?

It was actually really inspiring to see the legacy of GAY TIMES in one place and remembering what a powerful voice it’s been for the community and the impact it’s had over so many decades.

What advice would you give to aspiring queer DJs and producers looking to make their mark in the music industry?

Finish as much music as possible and be consistent. Go to the parties you want to play at and make friends with people there. Play and make music that you love, put the work in and always be kind to people along the way!

Bronski Beat’s ‘Smalltown Boy’ (ABSOLUTE. Rework) is available to stream and download now.

Brazilian superstar Gloria Groove has announced a raft of international tour dates, including shows in the UK and Europe.

The drag queen – and former GAY TIMES Magazine cover star – will play headline shows this summer, bringing her fierce stage presence and fiery anthems to a number of venues and festivals.

Gloria will appear at Dublin’s Mother Pride Block Party on 28 June, before headlining London’s Electric Ballroom on 9 July.

The star will also perform across a number of major European cities, including Paris, Barcelona, Lisbon and Berlin.

Tracks like VERMELHO, NOSSA MÚSICA and A QUEDA have amassed hundreds of millions of streams for Gloria Groove, positioning her as one of Brazil’s biggest music artists.

Her latest album FUTURO FLUXO celebrates the legacy and style of Brazilian funk, blending it with influences of futurism and sci-fi.

“With this album I want to create a historical document of Brazilian funk, put my stamp on this style, break that bubble, celebrate my adolescence, my high school, and unite my passion for funk with my passion for technological, futuristic, science fiction aesthetics,” Gloria told GAY TIMES last summer in her cover story.

“It’s so crazy, when I started talking about FUTURO FLUXO, Beyoncé hadn’t come up with the Renaissance aesthetic yet. I remember being at the Renaissance show and thinking, ‘It’s the right time! If mother said it’s time to talk about the future, it’s because the time has come.’ It’s funk, it’s trap, it’s futurism, it’s Gloria Groove, it’s dance!”

The full list of Gloria Groove’s UK and Europe tour dates are as follows:

Friday, 28 June – Dublin, IE – Mother Pride Block Party
Sunday, 30 June – Belgium, BE – Madeleine
Monday, 1 July – Paris, FR – Bataclan
Wednesday, 3 July – Berlin, DE – Furiosa (Astra)
Monday, 8 July – Amsterdam, NL – Melkweg
Tuesday, 9 July – London, UK – Electric Ballroom

A hub of creativity, culture, cuisine and community, it’s simply one of the most divine destinations for LGBTQ+ travellers.

Words by Lewis Corner

As you drive east out of Los Angeles, the temperature quickly starts to climb, the Californian desert stretches far ahead, and the enormity of the mountain range begins to loom even larger. But there, in the distance is a queer haven packed with as much rich history and culture as there are glistening palm trees.

Palm Springs is just over two hours drive from LAX, detached from the frantic streets of Hollywood and sitting as a tranquil oasis of bars, restaurants, shops and movie-like mid-century homes. There’s a good reason that it feels far enough away from La La Land, but actually very accessible. The movie stars of cinema’s golden era were contractually obliged to not travel more than 100 miles away from the studio just in case they needed to be called back at short notice. Palm Springs falls just within that range, but offered sanctuary from the media glare and movieland gossip. Frank Sinatra, Marlon Brando, Elvis Presley and Marilyn Munroe are just a handful who set up home in the city during the mid 20th century, in search of privacy and peace. That privacy was especially important for the LGBTQ+ stars of the time who were not publicly out. Palm Springs became somewhere they could live more openly with their lovers and embrace who they were, without fear of being outed. Towards the latter decades of the 1900s, as the HIV/AIDS epidemic devastated gay communities, victims flocked to Palm Springs when considering where they wanted to spend the rest of their days. With idyllic scenery and an inclusive local community, it was one of the more obvious, safest destinations.

These days, when it comes to LGBTQ+ visibility and inclusivity, Palm Springs is flying the flag higher than ever. The city is staunchly (and rightly) proud of its welcoming, inclusive community. Just two years ago, Lisa Middleton was elected the Mayor of Palm Springs and became the first openly trans person to be elected in California for a non-judicial position. Before her, Christy Holstege became the first openly bisexual female Mayor of Palm Springs, and before that Geoff Kors was the fourth openly gay mayor of the city. The role in 2022 is currently held by Grace Elena Garner who, last December, became the first Latina Mayor of Palm Springs. You can tread the streets of this historic and heavenly city safe in the knowledge that its community not only supports, but celebrates leaders who represent all walks of life.

Greater Palm Springs – where I spent the entirety of my trip – isn’t as big as you might expect. It has a population just shy of 45,000, but welcomes millions of visitors every year. It’s immediately clear why it is popular. Not only does it have good weather for a large portion of the year, the sheer majestic backdrop of the mountains that tower over the city can be seen wherever you are. They are so hypnotic that you never truly believe they are real. Add to that some of the finest modernism design in the world laid out perfectly along its sun-soaked streets, at times there is a movie-set quality to the surroundings – and we’re not just saying that because it recently served as the backdrop to Florence Pugh and Harry Styles-led blockbuster Don’t Worry Darling.

A hub of creativity, culture, cuisine and community, it’s simply one of the most divine destinations for LGBTQ+ travellers.

Palm Springs: What are the best things to do there?

From the natural to the man-made, Palm Springs isn’t short of spectacular sights. But let’s start with the obvious: that huge mountain range. While there are three mountain ranges that surround Palm Springs, the closest to Greater Palm Springs is the San Jacinto. Head over to the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway and within a 10-minute, 2.5-mile trip on the world’s largest rotating tram car, you are 8,516 feet up in the Mt. San Jacinto National Park with jaw-dropping views of the valley. The temperature noticeably dips when you’re that high up too, compared to the heat of the desert below. If you’re traveling in winter there is a high chance that you can enjoy the snow-capped peaks of the mountain with its crisp air, and warmer temperatures below for some winter sun, offering the best of both seasons.

At the foot of the mountain you will find the beautifully modernist Palm Springs Visitors Center, where you can book a tour to look at some of the most enchanting manmade sights of the city: the homes. Modernism Week and Palm Springs Architecture Tours have teamed up for a special experience that traverses the city to view some of the most stylish architecture in all of the United States. The more than two-hour trip is hosted by experts who give an in-depth tour of the history of Palm Springs and how it became the modernist capital of the world. With homes that once belonged to Marilyn Monroe and Elvis Presley to name but a few, it’s a fascinating guide to a city that sprung up out of the desert and attracted some of the most distinguished architects and designers in the world to create these beautiful abodes. Every February a good number of these homes are opened up for visitors during Palm Springs’ world-famous 11-day festival Modernism Week, allowing guests to view the interiors of these 20th century marvels.

The reason the inside of these homes look so captivating? Palm Springs has some of the best furniture stores out there. A trip to the 40,000 square foot Market Market showed some of the best the destination has to offer, with gorgeously designed furniture, eye-catching art, and some unique apparel collections, it’s a shoppers’ dream. Expertly curated, the store includes vintage and repurposed items that you won’t find anywhere else, perfectly capturing the historic and creative charm of Palm Springs.

Throughout the city there are plenty of boutiques offering a distinctive and enjoyable shopping experience. The Uptown Design District is home to locally-owned businesses selling jewelry, clothing, homewares and souvenirs. There’s also The Webster Palm Springs for those who have a keen interest in luxury clothing brands. From Celine to Saint Laurent, the boutique store has a sublimely curated collection of fashion for all expressions. On Thursday evenings there’s the Palm Springs Village Fest in the heart of downtown Palm Springs, with stalls upon stalls of art, shopping, entertainment and street food.

If you’re in the mood to get creative and repurpose some of your own clothing, that’s possible too. A hybrid art gallery, boutique and design lab, Superbloom gives guests the opportunity to express their individuality while also discovering the colours that speak to them best. Through accessible painting techniques and in an environment that encourages experimentation, you can bring along clothing or accessories to give a makeover by using splatters of paint. Superbloom focuses on 10 colours total, each having their own meaning. Co-founded by Alexis Palomino and Chris Ramirez, it’s a creative activity that can bring new life to an old pair of sunglasses, while giving space to a moment of self-discovery.

The diversity of art in Palm Springs can’t be overstated either. One example is The Gaia Hypothesis at The Elemental: A Contemporary Center for The Arts. Curated by Christopher Yggdre, the exhibition focuses on the intersection of art and the environment, bringing together works by 14 international artists that represent the fundamental elements of earth, wind, fire and water. Works range from the 1970s to the present day, but all of them look squarely towards the future and comment on the ongoing climate crisis in various ways. Amongst the many other galleries, the Palm Springs Art Museum is a must-visit. With over 12,000 objects of modern and contemporary works across three floors, there’s plenty to be inspired by.

If you want to experience the unique history of Palm Springs but also treat yourself to rest and relaxation, then the newly opened Spa at Séc-he is the one. This sprawling facility (over 73,000 square feet) offers a vast array of treatments and experiences to refresh and revitalise. The mineral baths pumped with sacred waters from the ancient hot springs soothes the muscles and skin. There are two float pod suites that will relax your body beyond belief, and a grounding room offers a sensation like no other. Treatments range from full-body massages and cryotherapy, to mud wraps, salt scrubs and collagen facials. You will be leaving the spa absolutely glowing.

Palm Springs: Where are the best places to stay, eat and drink?

Palm Springs has a hotel problem… there’s so many boutique properties offering bespoke experiences that it’s pretty damn hard to choose where you want to stay. It’s a good problem to have. Take the intimate setting of Villa Royale, with its flowing fountain waters, luscious plants, and its rustic yet ornate design. It’s Californian chic that echoes the romance of the mid-20th century in all the right ways. It feels intimate, but not too cramped. Grab a seat in its restaurant Del Rey for delicious cocktails and pick from a menu crammed with sharing plates from Spanish mussels and grilled artichokes, to tender flat iron steaks and fried eggplant. The pool is one of the prettiest of them all, with the entire grounds glimmering with charm and comfort.

Recently-opened Drift Palm Springs gives modern desert chic, with its stylish neutral tones and minimal approach. A centrally-located pool with beds and cabanas is surrounded by 36 rooms in this boutique hotel that spans 43,000 square feet. The rooms are relaxing with a hammock just outside for those chilled dusky evenings. Maleza is the on-site bar serving food and drink, offering deliciously sharp margaritas with a kick.

Boutique hotels don’t get more gay than Trixie Motel; a pink paradise created by Drag Race royalty Trixie Mattel. The capital of kitsch, this intricately designed hotel has seven rooms all designed completely different from each other, giving guests a unique experience. The bar has frames upon frames of Trixie and her famous friends across the wall (including Elvis himself), and prides itself on being a true safe space for all members of the LGBTQ+ community who visit.

Elsewhere, from the perfectly coiffed lawns and spacious rooms of Avalon Hotel and Bungalows, to the Art Deco glamour of romantic Americana at the Colony Palms Hotel and Bungalows (the pool is idyllic), Palm Springs’ eclectic selection of properties can cater to all tastes.

The same can be said about the local cuisine too. FARM Palm Springs serves up French cuisine in a rustic setting, perfect for breakfast and brunch in its warm surroundings. A tasty menu of omelets, crepes and salads go down even nicely while surrounded by greenery, making you feel like you’ve taken a trip to the countryside.

The iconic Lulu California Bistro is a local favourite and is always bustling, serving up brunch and an all-day menu packed with salads, burgers, pasta dishes and BBQ ribs. You truly cannot go wrong with anything you pick. For quick bites and lunch, Juniper Table in the Kimpton Rowan has a healthy selection of salads and sandwiches centred on Mediterranean flavours. Mr Lyons Steakhouse in the evenings evokes old Hollywood chic, with delicious steak dishes serving up a fine dining experience.

Palm Springs: Why is it so great for LGBTQ+ visitors?

Simply put, Palm Springs is a queer oasis for LGBTQ+ travelers looking for a truly inclusive destination. There is an incredibly visible LGBTQ+ scene in the city, and you can’t go a few buildings before seeing Pride and trans flags flying proudly. The community in Palm Springs felt alive and thriving, ready to welcome queer tourists. You will often see queer couples walking the streets holding hands and the local community feels solid in their approach to creating a safe destination for all LGBTQ+ visitors.

Arenas is the centre of it all, brimming with LGBTQ+ venues and queer-owned businesses. We popped into Blackbook to try their specially-brewed Blackbook Hibiscus Blond (gorgeous!) and Palm Springs Styles Nachos (gorgeous again!). The venue was a hub of LGBTQ+ community that was welcoming and uplifting. From Hunters Nightclub to Palm Springs’ OG queer venue Streetbar, there are plenty of places to unwind and have fun.

As for queer-owned businesses, they range from barbershops to bike rentals to Bear Wear. There’s also health centers, community centers, and plenty of gay hotels, resorts and inns to visit and stay. The LGBTQ+ community very much appears to be the bedrock of the city. You’ll find regular cabaret and drag shows, with our second evening spent playing Fabulous Bingo with Bella Da Ball at the King’s Highway restaurant at the Ace Hotel.

You can only imagine how much the city lights up for its annual Greater Palm Springs Pride in November; an outlier in the Pride calendar so the queer community can march during a more suitable temperature. With special programming, big name performances and plenty of marching in solidarity, it’s a great opportunity to jump back into the Pride spirit outside of the congested June celebrations elsewhere.

Across the six days I spent during my first trip to Palm Springs I was genuinely taken by how effortlessly inclusive and idyllic the city is as a destination for LGBTQ+ travelers. Culture, community, cuisine and creativity has built this city into a must-visit destination for queer people wanting to escape the everyday and have a taste of paradise.
